Responsibilities

THE ROLE AND OUR TEAM

This is an exciting time to join the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero (DESNZ) where we are defining what our department needs to look like in the immediate and longer term.

This includes:

  • Playing an active role in ensuring that the organisation’s operating design effectively and efficiently achieves business purpose and strategy whilst delivering high quality customer and employee experience.
  • Continuing to design and embed the right structures, ways of working across a dynamic operating environment.

As part of a supportive Organisation Design team within DESNZ HR, you’ll provide expertise and advice that helps senior leaders (Director Generals, Directors and their Senior Leadership teams, the Executive Committee) address business challenges. This includes problem solving, deciding if organisation design is part of the solution and if it is, agreeing an approach and contracting to provide expertise.
We are looking for a candidate proficient in Organisation Design with effective interpersonal skills, who can work collaboratively, influence and has an interest in organisational effectiveness, and a drive to deliver people-focused change, within a complex organisation or ambiguous environment(s).
The role offers a great opportunity to make a difference and shape the department of the future ensuring our people feel supported and well-equipped to deal with change.
Please note for the role to be offered on a part time basis, the successful applicant would need to agree to a 0.8 minimum FTE.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Organisation Design consultant role is an influential role, and you will:
Provide Organisation Design expertise, leading the design and delivery of impactful Organisation Design (OD) interventions as well as building OD capability across DESNZ HR and wider that aligns with the delivery of the OD Service Offer, Department’s priorities, and Values.
Work with a ‘client’ (Director General or Director and/or their Senior Leadership Teams), advising them on the best approach by understanding their business challenges, often helping them to problem solve and get beyond the presenting issues.

This includes:

  • Drawing on Organisation Design and Development methodologies, analytics, benchmarks, and other tools to inform and shape design solutions such as business models, design principles, high-level and detailed organisation design, ways to explore issues and strengthen organisational effectiveness - this could for example involve looking at ways of working.
  • Evaluating, analysing, and interpreting data (e.g. people, cost, and skills) to create and present evidence-based insight, understanding impacts of change for people, systems, processes etc. and providing recommendations.
  • Working across DESNZ (with policy and corporate colleagues), develop clear evidence-based proposals, and influence senior stakeholders. This includes communicating effectively, being adaptable, curious, and being comfortable operating with a high degree of autonomy where there is complexity and ambiguity.
  • Working collaboratively with colleagues across the Organisation Design Team, DESNZHR (including Organisation Development), Transformation and wider including across boundaries.
  • Be part of a small team, working alongside the HR Business Partners, change and business experts and you will be adept at building strong working relationships to enable you to use your expertise to achieve maximum impact and build Organisation Design capability.
