Manitoba Environment and Climate Change is seeking a qualified individual to fill the position of Manager, Orphaned and Abandoned Mine Engineer within the Environmental Programs and Remediation Branch.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Must be registered or eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba (EGM) prior to date of hire
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Manitoba Class 5 Driver’s Licence
  • Must be willing and able to travel throughout the province with occasional overnight stays as required including remote areas
  • Must be physically able to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position such as site visits and investigations

Qualifications:

Essential:

  • Undergraduate degree in Engineering (e.g. Environmental, Civil, Chemical, Geological, Geotechnical, Mining or Biosystems Engineering). Master’s Degree in related field is preferred.
  • Relevant work experience in the rehabilitation, remediation construction, or related environmental field (contaminated sites, environmental assessment, mine closure, remediation).
  • Strong organizational and project management skills including the ability to work on several complex tasks simultaneously, and prioritize workloads to meet strict deadlines.
  • Excellent leadership and supervisory skills, including the ability to motivate staff and lead teams through complex, challenging projects.
  • Experience managing contracts and/or grants.
  • Strong financial management experience with responsibility for financial resources.
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills, including experience working with colleagues, agencies and other non-governmental organizations.
  • Ability to manage the development of programs, policies, and work plans to address emerging issues and address strategic priorities.
  • Ability to lead the development of techniques and strategies to address complex environmental and public safety concerns.
  • Ability to work independently, under tight timelines and with minimal supervision.

Desired:

  • Verbal and written proficiency in French.

Duties:
Reporting to the Director of Environmental Programs and Remediation, the Manager is responsible to lead the provincial Orphaned and Abandoned Mines Program for the department of Environment and Climate Change. This includes the planning, organizing, budgeting, and direction of the technical and administrative activities for the program, as well as strategic planning to address priorities and issues regarding site remediation and long-term management. Provides engineering direction and oversight to engineering staff across the branch for the management and remediation of mine sites, contaminated sites and quarries.
