JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Outside Contractor Salesperson is responsible for developing and maintaining contractor and commercial accounts. His or her duties include being familiar with pricing, local building codes, and types of building permits issued; maintaining call reference and prospect files, calling on accounts regularly, attending bid openings and preparing quotations, as well as a variety of other related duties. The outside salesperson must perform all assigned tasks with sufficient speed and accuracy to avoid adverse impact on the level of service to customers and to achieve sales profitability.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be able to communicate effectively and persuasively with employees, management, suppliers, customers, and prospective customers to obtain accurate information for bids, pricing, estimates, quotations, etc.
  • Read, comprehend, and interpret written and printed materials and information presented in numerical and / or statistical form.
  • Read, comprehend and interpret Blueprints for the purpose of creating a materials take off list.
  • Ability to understand the need to sell the whole basket of good - Lumber, Trim& Doors, EWP, Trusses, Siding, Insulation etc.
  • Must possess mathematical skills necessary to prepare accurate and competitive bids in a timely manner.
  • Must have a valid G license
  • Ability to work co-operatively in a team atmosphere.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain sales to contractor and commercial accounts.
  • Be familiar with and maintain up-to-date information on pricing.
  • Know local building codes.
  • Know types of building permits issued.
  • Communicate product knowledge to the customer as appropriate.
  • Develop and maintain sales call reference files and prospect lists.
  • Know prices, practices, and policies of the company’s competitors.
  • Establish and adhere to a regular schedule for calling on accounts.
  • Help customers solve building problems.
  • Develop and maintain current files on new products.
  • Update yourself with practical knowledge of building materials and lumber products, including their uses, advantages, and disadvantages.
  • Resolve customer complaints.
  • Develop positive working relationships with building inspectors.
  • Attend bid openings and make quotations.
  • Be familiar with current yard inventory and surplus items.
  • Keep complete, accurate records of expenses.
  • Present proposals in a timely manner, after the estimating process is concluded and the potential profit has been established.
  • Suggest rule, policy and / or procedural changes when you believe they would improve efficiency, sales, profits, morale, etc.
  • Maintain professional confidentiality of all store and customer records.
  • Work on additional duties and assignments as assigned by management.
  • Work in a safe manner in accordance to provincial and federal safety legislation, as well as use of good common sense. Report any potential hazards and unsafe behavior to management in order to have the situation corrected.
