Boeing Commercial Airplanes (BCA) is seeking a Packaging Engineering Specialist (Level 2, 3, or 4) to support the Global Supply Chain Transportation & Logistics (GSCTL) BCA Packaging Engineering team in North Charleston, South Carolina.
Global Supply Chain Transportation & Logistics (GSCTL) supports operations and strategy in logistics and packaging engineering. Joining GSCTL will introduce you to the company’s many operations requiring logistics support. You will be joining a team of Packaging Engineering Specialists who are hard-working, goal-oriented and creative. We are looking for a new team member to participate in supporting complex projects and initiatives related to Packaging goals and objectives.
Packaging Engineering Specialists perform critical functions to include: making recommendations for the storage and distribution of materials; evaluating, classifying, designing, developing and testing packaging for parts protection; researching, developing and validating packaging designs; and designing and developing material handling devices. Packaging Engineers are competent with accountability and responsibility, continuous improvement, continuous learning, innovation and creativity, planning and organizing, strategic decision making, and teamwork.
Travel within the North Charleston region may be required to support other Boeing locations.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS (REQUIRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE):

  • 1+ years of experience reading and interpreting engineering drawings and specifications
  • 1+ years of experience working with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • 1+ years of experience using professional written and verbal communication skills to achieve deliverables
  • 1+ years of experience in a manufacturing or manufacturing support environment
  • 1+ years of experience working with CAD/CAM software (e.g. SolidWorks, CATIA, AutoCAD)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (DESIRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE):

  • Level 3: 3+ years related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Level 4: 5+ years related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience in a role involving packaging, handling, storage and transportation (to meet customer requirements)
  • Experience with shop floor processes (e.g., Foreign Object Damage/Debris (FOD) prevention, material handling, and safety)
  • Experience working independently
  • Analytical and design skills
  • Critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • Knowledge of transportation, shipping, receiving, and storage procedures to understand & identify requirements and impacts
  • Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing principles
Responsibilities

ASSOCIATE (LEVEL 2) PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collaborates with guidance to determine packaging requirements to support the global supply chain
  • Assists more experienced personnel in developing packaging standards to be incorporated into supplier contracts
  • Works with oversight to develop packaging that protects products against deterioration and damage during shipment, material handling, and storage
  • Engages with direction to develop packaging to increase user safety
  • Contributes with support in developing packaging aiming to reduce single-use packaging waste
  • Participates with mentorship in the development of packaging to address unique program and customer requirements
  • Aids more experienced personnel in creating, documenting, and communicating specific packaging instructions and procedures to be used for shipment, material handling, and storage requirements
  • Collaborates with oversight to design, implement, and maintain reusable support structures that protect the product and equipment throughout the distribution cycle

MID-LEVEL (LEVEL 3) PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Under general supervision, assists in determining packaging requirements to support the global supply chain
  • Develops packaging standards to be incorporated into supplier contracts
  • Develops packaging for the protection of products against deterioration and damage during shipment, material handling, and storage
  • Designs packaging to increase user safety
  • Develops packaging to reduce single-use packaging waste
  • Collaborates cross-functionally to develop packaging needs that address unique program and customer requirements
  • Creates, documents, and communicates specific packaging instructions and procedures to be used for shipment, material handling, and storage requirements
  • Designs, implements, and manages reusable support structures that protect the product and equipment in the distribution cycle

SENIOR (LEVEL 4) PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Following overall management plan, establishes and provides direction for packaging requirements to support the global supply chain
  • Leads coordination and development of packaging standards for incorporation into contracts for all suppliers that provide products to Boeing
  • Takes initiative to design packaging for the protection of products against deterioration and damage during shipment, material handling, and storage
  • Uses knowledge and expertise to design packaging that incorporates methods to increase safety for users
  • Dynamically designs and implements packaging that incorporates methods for reduction of single-use packaging waste
  • Collaborates cross-functionally to design packaging that addresses unique program and customer requirements
  • Creates, documents, and communicates specific packaging instructions and procedures to be used for shipment, material handling, and storage requirements
  • Provides technical oversight of packaging fabrication service provider contracts
  • Designs, implements, and manages reusable support structures that protect the product and equipment in the distribution cycle and does not interface with product to support installation
