JOB SUMMARY

The Packaging Mechanic is responsible for performing set-ups, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair tasks on various pharmaceutical packaging equipment to ensure efficient and uninterrupted production. This role requires in-depth mechanical knowledge, the ability to perform changeovers, and a strong understanding of GMP and safety regulations.

REQUIRED SKILLS & COMPETENCIES

  • Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to troubleshoot, repair, and maintain packaging machinery.
  • Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.
  • Proficient in using hand and power tools, measuring equipment (e.g., micrometer, caliper, VOM).
  • Familiarity with cGMP standards, OSHA regulations, and pharmaceutical manufacturing practices.
  • Capable of working independently and within a team.
  • Basic English literacy and math skills.
  • Basic PC proficiency; experience with PLCs is a plus.

EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience as a packaging mechanic in a pharmaceutical, supplement, food, or nutraceutical manufacturing environment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to lift up to 35 lbs. and occasionally up to 50 lbs.
  • Stand/walk on the production floor for at least 7 hours per shift.
  • Perform frequent bending, squatting, kneeling, climbing, and reaching.
  • Operate from rolling ladders and step stools as needed.
  • Use of PPE including lab coat, gloves, face mask, safety glasses, safety shoes, and respirators.
Responsibilities

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform moderate to complex adjustments, maintenance, and mechanical repairs on packaging and pneumatic equipment.
  • Set up, changeover, and troubleshoot packaging machines and basic electrical systems.
  • Conduct daily preventive maintenance on packaging machinery, conveyors, compressors, and related equipment.
  • Support equipment installations and complete maintenance work orders as needed.
  • Read and interpret mechanical and electrical manuals to diagnose issues and perform repairs.
  • Operate and maintain multiple machines including but not limited to: bottle unscramblers, tablet counters, fillers, cappers, labelers, banders, heat tunnels, case packers, QR code printers, and dust collectors.
  • Detect and report faulty operations, defective materials, and unusual conditions to supervision.
  • Maintain accurate and compliant documentation (e.g., operation logs, batch records).
  • Ensure product quality through regular inspections and in-process testing.
  • Train and guide Packaging Operators in machine operation, changeovers, cleaning, and sanitation.
  • Follow and enforce safety rules and procedures, ensuring a safe work environment.
  • Assist with general maintenance and other tasks within the facility as required.
  • Maintain regular attendance, work extended hours, and occasional weekends as needed.
