Description Full-Time (40 hours) - Day Shift Responsible for the management of all nursing care rendered immediately post-operative. He/she is capable of making intelligent, independent decisions in all aspects of PACU Nursing and has a working knowledge of surgical procedures and an equal knowledge of the technical equipment utilized for monitoring delivery of care Functions of Position (not an exhaustive list): Provide optimal patient care in the immediate post-operative phase of anesthesia and surgery Notifies physician and anesthetist of any adverse alteration in patient’s physical status and initiates emergency measures Notifies Diagnostic Imaging, Laboratory, Cardiopulmonary, or Pharmacy of physicians’ requests regarding immediate post-operative needs Restocks supplies, at the end of the day, which have been used during the course of the day Regulates, monitors, maintains, and documents all intravenous fluids that the patient receives in the PACU. Maintains accurate records of all vital signs, drains, and special equipment used on patient for recovery Requirements Qualifications: Education a. Graduate of an accredited school of nursing b. Certification in Basic Life Support c. Certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Licensure/Certification a. Current North Carolina license as a registered nurse Experience a. At least two (2) years of recent PACU or critical care experience that has afforded a working experience with the different types of operative procedures and anesthetic agents currently used so as to be prepared to provide optimum care for the patient in the immediate post-operative phase of anesthesia Physical Demands a. Frequent standing and walking b. Lifting – frequently up to 25 lb; occasionally up to 40 lbs c. Carrying – frequently 25 lbs d. Pushing and/or pulling – frequently 100 lbs. e. Repetitive finger movements – frequently f. Repetitive twisting and/or pressure involving wrists and hands
Responsibilities
The PACU RN is responsible for providing optimal nursing care to patients in the immediate post-operative phase of anesthesia and surgery. They must monitor patient status, initiate emergency measures when necessary, and maintain accurate records of vital signs and intravenous fluids.
