PAID College Internship-District 4-Employee Health & Safety Dept., PN 20053165 What You Will Do: Work closely with the Safety and Health Program Consultant to determine root causes of accident and injuries. Assist Safety and Health Inspectors with Facility and Jobsite Inspections. Communicate best safety practices with workers and supervisors. Official Position Description: This is a temporary position involving various duties that will either supplement the student’s major field of study &/or provide experience that is a useful addition to the student’s education & meaningful preparation for future professional employment. Under close supervision, this student assists the Safety & Health Program Consultant & section staff in the performance of various duties. Assists with completing required reports (e.g., district logs, monthly accident & injury reports); gathers data; completes reports using personal computer & software (e.g., Microsoft Office); files safety forms in employees accident & workers compensation files; assists with accident investigations (e.g., reviews accidents & injuries to determine root causes, uses telephone &/or fax to contact supervisors & injured workers for clarification of responses on forms); assists with worksite inspections (e.g., observes workers for use of prescribed safety apparel (e.g., safety glasses, hard hats, googles, vests, respirators) to ensure safe work & vehicle operation practices have been followed); assists with creating & distributing educational materials & posters related to safety using personal computer & software (e.g., Microsoft Office); greets & assists visitors & completes customer requests (e.g., provides copies of accident &/or injury reports); assists departmental staff on a variety of small projects; completes updates regarding daily assignments as directed. Performs miscellaneous duties to facilitate the operational efficiency of the work unit (e.g., maintains accurate records, organizes material & compiles information to assist in report preparation). Serves as backup for greeting & directing visitors (e.g., general public & district employees); answers telephone & directs incoming calls to appropriate party or takes messages; provides information about ODOT activities &/or programs by responding to inquiries received by telephone &/or email using computer & related software (e.g., Microsoft Outlook). This Position is Unclassified per Section 124.11(A)(29). Must be enrolled in an accredited college or university and in good academic standing. Student should be enrolled in college degree program directly related to Safety Management or the related field. If operating a state-owned vehicle, must show proof of valid driver's license.
