Position Status: Volunteer
Compensation: Volunteer Role (includes complimentary YMCA gym membership)

EDUCATION & SKILL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A passion for basketball and working with youth
  • Previous coaching or playing experience is an asset, but not required
  • Strong communication and leadership skills
  • Ability to create a fun, inclusive, and respectful team environment
  • Must be reliable, punctual, and a positive role model
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships and foster trust
  • Flexibility to volunteer during evenings and weekends

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completion of YMCA onboarding documentation
  • Child Abuse Registry Check
  • Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check (if 18 years or older)
  • Valid First Aid and CPR Certification
  • Respect in Sport (or willingness to complete)
  • Attend Child Safeguarding Training upon hire

Responsibilities

The Volunteer Panthers Coach plays a vital role in fostering a positive, inclusive, and development-focused environment for youth athletes. You’ll work closely with YMCA program staff to teach fundamental basketball skills, promote sportsmanship, and create a safe, supportive space for youth development.
Time Commitment: 1-2 practices a week, 1 game (approximately 4 - 6 hours total per week)
Term Length: September to April, with opportunity to continue into summer months if desired

In this role, you will:

  • Plan and lead practices focused on skill development, teamwork, and enjoyment of the game
  • Provide guidance, encouragement, and positive reinforcement to all players
  • Model respect, effort, and sportsmanship in line with YMCA values – especially “Each One Teach One”
  • Ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all participants
  • Communicate effectively with players, families, and staff, building trust and meaningful relationships
  • Manage team behaviour, promote fair play, and guide positive conflict resolution
  • Attend required training, meetings, practices, and games (typically evenings and/or weekends)
  • Follow all YMCA policies, including child safeguarding protocols
  • Complete YMCA onboarding and certifications as required (e.g., Respect in Sport, First Aid/CPR)
  • Perform other duties as required to support the program
