Description
The Paralegal provides substantive legal support to attorneys in state and federal litigation, administrative proceedings, and related public agency matters. This role is responsible for managing discovery, drafting legal documents, coordinating filings and deadlines, supporting hearings and trials, and serving as a liaison with clients and agencies. The Paralegal exercises sound judgment, maintains strict confidentiality, and operates in accordance with firm policies and professional standards. Essential Duties and Responsibilities * Support attorneys in all phases of litigation, administrative proceedings, and related public agency matters, including records requests and productions (e.g., California Public Records Act and labor relations statutes), agency oversight, legislative and policy advocacy support, and other projects supporting the team. * Draft, revise, and proofread pleadings, motions, discovery requests and responses, memoranda, correspondence, and email communications. * Manage and calendar deadlines for due process hearings (including complaints, mediations, and pre-hearing conferences) and court actions (including complaints, responses, discovery, motions, appeals, and conferences), ensuring compliance with applicable rules and procedures. * Prepare and file documents in state and federal courts and before administrative agencies in accordance with local rules. * Manage all aspects of civil discovery, including e-discovery and document production. * Oversee large-scale document review projects, including data organization, analysis, and delivery of structured work product. * Conduct legal research and assist with drafting memoranda and case analyses. * Provide trial and hearing support, including exhibit preparation and coordination of logistics. * Serve as a liaison to clients for document searches and retrieval related to litigation, CPRA matters, and union RFIs. * Utilize case management, document management, and legal technology platforms to maintain organized and accessible records. * Proactively manage multiple assignments for various attorneys, prioritizing workflow in a fast-paced environment. * Communicate effectively and professionally with attorneys, clients, staff, courts, and administrative agencies. * Collaborate in a team-oriented environment, including geographically distributed teams. * Additional duties may be assigned as required to meet business needs. Qualifications and Requirements * Must meet the requirements of California Business & Professions Code § 6450; bachelor’s degree strongly preferred. * Experience in Education Law, Administrative Law, or other public sector–related matters preferred. * Strong knowledge of civil litigation procedures, court filings, and administrative processes. * Expertise in managing deadlines, filings, and compliance with local, state, and federal rules and procedures. * Strong hands-on knowledge of all aspects of civil discovery and e-discovery case management. * Proven ability to manage large-scale document reviews and analyze significant volumes of data. * Excellent legal research, writing, and proofreading skills. * Self-directed, proactive problem-solver with exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage priorities under pressure. * Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Adobe Acrobat, and document management systems such as iManage. * Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills; professional and businesslike demeanor. * Dependable with strong attendance and punctuality. Physical Requirements * Regular, on-site attendance is required; this position is not eligible for remote or hybrid work. * Prolonged periods of sitting, with frequent standing and walking throughout the workday. * Frequent use of a computer for extended periods, including reading, writing, and document preparation. * Clear verbal communication in both in-person and telephone interactions. * Fine motor coordination for tasks such as typing, writing, using a computer mouse, and operating office equipment. * Occasional bending, kneeling, or climbing as needed. * Ability to lift up to 10 pounds. * Availability to work more than 40 hours per week, including overtime when necessary. Salary Range: $85,000 - $100,000
