The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established in a critical act of self-determination over 50 years ago as part of the Aboriginal rights protest movement. We provide high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT, and fight for social justice and equity for our communities.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?

In this role, you will be an integral and valued member of a highly skilled and high-performing Criminal Law Practice. The Supreme Court Bails Paralegal will support Solicitors in delivering legal services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients, handling admin tasks and liaising with legal professionals. This role ensures the smooth running of Supreme Court bail matters through strong coordination and client support. You will:

  • Undertake administrative tasks within the Supreme Court bails practice, including opening new files, drafting and filing applications, communicating with clients and their families, rehabilitation facilities and other relevant service providers all within agreed timeframes.
  • Appearing at the Supreme Court Bail call over and preparing the list of matters to be heard.
  • Liaise with Police, Public Defenders, Solicitors, Court Staff, Corrective Services other ALS staff members and stakeholders for specified tasks as requested by solicitors including sending briefs, confirming dates, making appointments.
  • Assist the Crime Administration team with managing the Redfern reception area and operate the office phone system between the hours of 9.00 am to 5.00 pm and providing secretarial support services to Criminal Law Solicitors when required.
  • Prepare correspondence, briefs of evidence, subpoenas, affidavits, court reports and other documents using MS Office
  • Uphold ALS policies, promote cultural respect, and collaborate with team members to deliver ethical, client-focused services.
