HEABC leads and supports the strategic planning related to human resources and labour relations on behalf of British Columbia’s publicly funded health employers. HEABC is responsible for negotiating provincial agreements for 138,000 unionized health care employees including nurses, physician residents, ambulance paramedics, health science professionals, and more.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE & KNOWLEDGE:

  • Bachelor’s degree or completion of a college diploma as a paralegal or legal assistant.
  • In-house training in legal research with a law firm; preferably in the area of labour relations/labour and employment law.
  • Five years’ recent, relevant experience.
  • Superior oral and written communication skills
  • Team oriented, enthusiastic, and curious.
  • Superior time management skills and ability to juggle multiple projects, meet deadlines, organize workload, set priorities and remain calm under pressure.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, be proactive, resourceful, and able to find quick solutions.
    This position is well-suited to an individual interested in pursuing a career in an interesting segment of the public sector, and who values the opportunity to make a positive public contribution through their work.
    Salary Range: $67,861 to $97,550
    Typical Hiring Range: $67,861 to $84,826
    In determining salary, HEABC considers many factors including the successful candidate’s skillset and experience as well as internal equity. The final salary offer will be at HEABC’s sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.

Responsibilities
  • Conducting research, organizing, and analyzing information for legal counsel and leadership within the organization, primarily relating to the areas of labour and employment law.
  • Reviewing and collating collective bargaining information and evidence as required for litigation, bargaining and/or projects.
  • Acting as a resource and mentor for administrative staff; coordinating workflow, determining priorities and ensuring work is completed in a timely and professional manner.
  • Drafting correspondence, preparing minutes, and other administrative support.
  • Preparing for all litigation matters (labour arbitration hearings, labour relations board hearings and, occasionally, court matters) in conjunction with administrative staff including liaising internally and externally with member contacts, witnesses and opposing counsel.
  • Maintaining filing, precedents, database systems, and bring forward systems.
  • Assisting departments as necessary with presentations, project work, and other related tasks.
