Paramedics provide emergency treatment, including advanced life support, to patients in emergencies. By joining the Emergency Department team at Mercy Hospital as a Paramedic, you will assess the urgent medical needs of patients and stabilize their conditions. You will interact with other caregivers and be given directions on tasks to complete such as inserting IV lines, EKGs, assisting with patient transfers, and administering patient medications. Taking on this opportunity will help assist in patient flow and efficiency in the Emergency Department, which takes tasks off of the busy nursing staff. A caregiver in this position works variable days between 3:00PM – 3:30AM, including rotating weekends and holidays. A caregiver who excels in this role will: Provide duties that assist in providing patient care in the Emergency Department under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse. Obtain and record vital signs. Perform EKGs, CPR, phlebotomy and oral, nasal and ET suctioning. Initiate cardiac monitoring, oxygen therapy and saline locks. Notify the RN and/or physician of rhythm changes. Apply orthopaedic appliances and simple splints. Size crutches and teach crutch walking. Assist with equipment setup, chest tubes, gastric lavage, LP, etc. Assist with restraint and seclusion of patients and apply restraint devices. Transport patients and specimens. Assist with sterile procedures and cleaning and maintaining supplies and equipment. Maintain confidentiality and respect patient privacy. Perform fluid/drug administration. Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: Completion of an accredited EMS-Paramedic training program Current licensure as an Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic (EMTP) in Ohio Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross upon hire or within one year of start date in the Emergency Department Clinical experience through an EMS Paramedic training program Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: International Trauma Life Support (ITLS) One year of experience as an EMT-P Physical Requirements: Requires full body motion to move and lift patients, manual finger dexterity with good eye-hand coordination; involves extensive standing and walking. Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
