As a Parks Labourer/Outdoor Custodian you will report to a foreman (or delegate) and will be responsible for maintaining cleanliness of parks in Centre Region (Zone 9). Your work will also be guided by Standard Operating Procedures. You will be focusing solely on garbage and debris removal using small equipment and tools such as power washers, litter pickers, brooms, and shovels. Primary duties include:

  • Perform pre-trip vehicle and equipment/tool inspection. Drive from site to site in downtown core.
  • Remove litter and debris from Parks using hand tools (e.g. brooms, pickers, and shovels).
  • Includes used needles, debris from encampments, biohazards etc.
  • Power wash the hard surfaces.
  • Perform other duties such as daily tracking and field level hazard assessments.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A valid Class 5 Driver’s License (or provincial equivalency) with no more than 6 demerits OR a Class 5 Graduated Driver’s License (GDL) with no more than 4 demerits, and no current charges or suspension pending is required.
  • A High school diploma or equivalent (e.g., GED) will be considered an asset.
  • Previous experience in any of the following would be considered an asset:
  • Experience working with power and hand tools.
  • Experience working around unhoused community and or/enforcement agencies.
  • Experience working with iPad/iPhone, Survey 123, and ArcGIS.
  • Experience working in property or outdoor site cleaning, hazmat and/or environmental and hazardous clean up.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a demonstrated customer focus and the ability to work with and assist team members.
  • Proven safety awareness and dependability for completing all aspects of the job.
    Working Conditions: This position operates small equipment; works around garbage, chemicals, and biohazards. Work is outdoors in all weather conditions, around traffic and the public, including the vulnerable population.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS

  • Must obtain a City of Calgary operator’s permit
  • Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.
    Pre-employment Drug Test: An offer of employment for this position will be conditional on an applicant passing a pre-employment drug test. This test assesses for use of drugs including cannabis. Failure to pass a pre-employment drug test may prevent an applicant from being hired into any safety sensitive position for a period of up to twelve months.
