Job Posting Title Parks Maintenance/Laborer Seasonal Job Opportunity: Park Maintenance/Laborer Seasonal City of Independence, Iowa | Parks and Recreation Department The City of Independence is seeking hardworking, reliable, and detail-oriented individuals to join our Parks & Recreation team as Parks Maintenance/Laborer Seasonal. This position plays a vital role in maintaining the beauty, safety, and functionality of our parks and recreational facilities throughout the summer season. Position Overview * Department: Parks and Recreation * Reports To: Parks and Recreation Director * Status: Seasonal–Temporary (maximum 120 working days) * FLSA Status: Non-Exempt The Role As a Parks Maintenance/Laborer, you will perform a variety of tasks to maintain and improve park and cemetery grounds, facilities, and equipment. Duties include landscaping, mowing, trimming, cleaning, and assisting with construction or repair projects. This position requires physical stamina, attention to detail, and the ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Key Duties and Responsibilities * Perform daily cleaning and maintenance of park facilities, including the Falcon Civic Center. * Mow, trim, and landscape park areas and cemetery; plant trees and maintain turf. * Assist with construction and repair of park structures and amenities. * Operate specialized equipment for mowing, trimming, and chemical application. * Maintain tools and equipment in good working order. * Work with city staff and outside consultants on park projects. * Perform other duties as assigned by the Parks and Recreation Director. Qualifications & Requirements * Knowledge & Skills:  * Understanding of park maintenance methods, materials, and practices. * Ability to operate and care for tools and equipment safely. * Knowledge of landscaping, horticulture, turf care, and chemical usage. * Ability to follow verbal and written instructions accurately. * Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills. * Licensing: Must possess a valid State of Iowa driver’s license. * Physical Requirements: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., bend, stoop, kneel, and work outdoors in varying conditions. * Work Style: Reliable, safety-conscious, and able to work independently or as part of a team. * Availability: Seasonal (May–Labor Day); hours vary and include weekdays, evenings, and weekends. * Age: Must be 18 years of age or older. Work Environment This position works primarily outdoors (90%) with occasional indoor tasks (10%). Exposure to heat, humidity, dust, noise, and outdoor elements is common. The role is considered safety-sensitive due to equipment operation and physical demands.
