This course will be delivered online.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Interviewing and Counselling Skills I (SSWK 1182) is a course in the PPL Social Service Workers Diploma Program. This course provides the students with an introduction to the basic theory and skills that are necessary for effective intentional interviewing and counselling. A micro-skills approach will be taken; students will be introduced to each of the individual communication units one at a time and have opportunities to incorporate them into practice. The focus will be on the counselling skills that comprise the basic listening sequence (BLS), an essential component in the development of a strong therapeutic alliance.
Interviewing and Counselling Skills II (SSWK 1281) is a course in the PPL Social Service Workers Diploma Program. This course is intended to build and expand upon the foundation of intentional interviewing and counselling skills introduced and practiced in Interviewing Skills I. Students will be introduced to various higher order skills as measured by the interpersonal influence continuum. In addition, students will be introduced to a variety of major theoretical perspectives on counseling, including the person-centered, cognitive behavioral and brief therapy models.
