Description The Part-Time Sewing Instructor leads engaging, skill-based workshops and classes focused on garment sewing, alterations, and creative projects. This role is responsible for both instruction and the development of new workshops that respond to community interest and support lifelong learning. This position supports a variety of programs, including workshops, recurring classes, open sew, and special events. The instructor creates a welcoming and inclusive environment where participants build confidence, technical skills, and creative expression. Key Responsibilities Instruction & Facilitation Teach sewing classes and workshops for beginner to intermediate participants Provide instruction in machine operation, garment construction, alterations, and use of commercial patterns Support open sew sessions and special events as needed Adapt teaching methods to meet diverse skill levels, learning styles, and language needs Foster a positive, inclusive, and engaging classroom environment Workshop Development Design and develop new workshops based on participant interest and organizational goals Create lesson plans, supply lists, and participant handouts Continuously refine workshops based on feedback and participation Maintain flexibility to adjust offerings and respond to program needs Classroom & Studio Management Prepare materials and ensure proper classroom setup and cleanup Maintain and monitor sewing machines and equipment (domestic and industrial, as applicable) Track supply inventory and communicate needs Support safe and organized use of the studio space Student & Volunteer Engagement Mentor participants and help reduce barriers to learning Guide and support volunteers assisting in classes and workshops Create an engaging and welcoming experience for all participants Organizational Alignment Represent The Sewing Labs’ values with professionalism, enthusiasm, and creativity Contribute ideas to strengthen programming, participation, and community impact Requirements Qualifications Strong sewing skills, including garment construction and pattern use Experience teaching or facilitating classes, workshops, or group instruction Ability to design and implement engaging, hands-on workshops Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work across cultures and skill levels Organized, dependable, and adaptable in a dynamic environment Passion for sewing and community-centered work Preferred Experience teaching beginner sewists Experience developing curriculum or workshop content Familiarity with alterations, quilting, or specialty sewing techniques Experience with industrial sewing equipment is a plus
Responsibilities
Lead skill-based sewing workshops and classes while developing new curriculum to meet community interests. Manage the studio space, including equipment maintenance and material preparation for participants.
