Description General Statement of Duties The purpose of this Job is to advise veterans and their dependents of their rights and benefits under Federal and State laws an assist with the application processes for entitled benefits. This position works under close to general supervision according to set procedures but determines how or when to complete tasks. Duties and Responsibilities The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary* · interviews, counsel, advises and assist veterans and their dependents in person, by phone or home visits to inform them of their benefit rights; advises and assist them in the preparation and development of evidence and documentation in support of application claims, and appeals to achieve those benefits. · Prepares briefs and provides assistance in preparing documents for appeal purposes; advises veterans of their rights. · Presents programs and information sessions to service organizations as well as local agencies and media; assists with the development and the execution of Veteran's and Memorial Day programs. · Investigates claims of survivors or dependents gathers supporting documentary evidence and processes claims through the Dept. of Veterans Affairs. · Provides home, nursing home and rest home visits to veterans or dependents when necessary or upon referral. · Assists in the compilation and written report preparation of the monthly statistical data, indicating the number of veterans assisted, number of claims processed, the category of the claim as well as the volume of work processed for the month. · Assists with veterans' status investigations of indigent hospital patients and if eligible, takes action to get them admitted to VA hospitals or the State Veterans' Nursing home; accepts referrals for claims from VA hospitals and mental health counselors. · Participates in county-wide community outreach to interact with veterans. · Assists Casualty Assistance Officers with military dependent benefits and death claims. · Performs related work as assigned. Requirements Physical Requirements Performs sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular basis or sustained keyboard operations. Minimum Education and Experience Associate degree Veteran Preferred Special Certifications and Licenses · Must possess and maintain a valid state Drivers License with an acceptable driving record. · Requires Certification as a Veterans Service Officer by the North Carolina Division of Veterans Affairs after one (1) year of training. · Requires positively completing the Federal TRIPS training course after Veterans Service Officer certification.
