Description:

The successful candidate will perform phlebotomy collections on wards and in the Outpatient department as required.
Key competencies (role specific criteria)

You will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate the following:

  • Ability to successfully perform specimen collection / specimen reception duties, adhering to established guidelines and policies.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the aspects of specimen collection / specimen reception procedures including understanding of medical terminology and application of established policies and guidelines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a responsible and efficient manner with and without supervision within a team environment. Ability to prioritise workload to meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated basic word processing skills, and computer data input and data retrieval skills.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills including respectful behaviour, cooperation, and the ability to communicate effectively and work productively in a team environment.
  • Availability to be flexible to work all shifts on existing and future pathology assistant roster patterns.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the importance of standard precautions and safety requirements in dealing with patients and biological specimens.
  • Demonstrated phone courtesy and ability to deal with enquiries from clients in a professional manner.
  • Demonstrated literacy and numeracy skills including the ability to read and follow instructions, work conscientiously and to contribute and function as an effective team member to achieve our organisational goals and objectives.
  • Demonstrate a high level of commitment to the principles of quality management and continuous quality improvement, in accordance with National Association of Testing Authority/International Standardisation Organisation (NATA/ISO).
  • Demonstrate ability to cooperate and actively participate in a working environment supporting quality human resource management practices including employment equity, anti-discrimination, workplace health and safety and an ethical environment.

Qualifications, registrations and other requirements

  • Demonstrated phlebotomy skills and knowledge would be highly regarded.
  • Certificate III in Pathology Assistance and / or Certificate III in Pathology Specimen Collection (Phlebotomy) would be highly regarded.
  • Previous experience in CSR would be well regarded although not mandatory.
  • Queensland Health staff will be required to participate in shift, on-call and/or weekend roster arrangements. In some circumstances and following consultation Queensland Health staff may be required to participate in 24 hour shift arrangements.

Vaccine Preventable Diseases (VPD) requirements

  • It will be a condition of employment for this role for the employee to be, and remain, vaccinated against one or more of the following vaccine preventable diseases during their employment: Hepatitis A & B, Measles, Mumps, Pertussis, Rubella and Varicella.
  • Additional vaccinations including Japanese Encephalitis and Rabies may also be required for this position.
