Job Title: Patient Service Specialist
Location: Boston, MA
Duration: 32 Weeks Temp - Perm
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8-hour shifts (40 hours/week)
Pay Rate: $17–$18 per hour
Position Summary: The Patient Service Specialist I provides administrative and front-line support to ensure high-quality service and seamless coordination of care for patients. This role is responsible for scheduling, registration, insurance verification, and customer service within a busy clinical setting.

Responsibilities
  • Answer and route telephone calls; take accurate messages and ensure timely follow-up.
  • Schedule patient appointments, testing, and follow-ups as required.
  • Register patients in the EMR (Athena or other systems), verify demographics, and obtain valid health insurance information.
  • Perform insurance eligibility checks to ensure accurate billing.
  • Collect co-pays and outstanding balances.
  • Follow scheduling guidelines, including scheduling across other BMCHS practices as needed.
  • Conduct daily pre-visit planning, including verifying insurance eligibility.
  • Obtain prior authorizations and insurance referrals when needed.
  • Provide general practice information and relay only provider-authorized medical advice.
  • Deliver excellent customer service to all patients.
  • Create patient cases and document communications within the EMR.
  • Conduct outreach to specific patient groups to support care coordination and quality initiatives.
  • Schedule specialty appointments or diagnostic testing as directed.
  • Manage EMR tasks and inboxes (buckets) according to practice needs.
  • Report supply needs or assist with ordering supplies.
  • Follow up on missing documentation and generate claims in Athena.
  • Work revenue cycle tasks (buckets) as assigned.
  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA guidelines.
  • Follow all BMHS policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional administrative duties as needed.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision.
