SUMMARY:

The purpose of the Patient Care Technician is to assist the nurse and respiratory therapist in patient care delivery of patients ranging from zero to 18 years old, and assist in managing the customer service experience during the patient stay within the organization.

WORK EXPERIENCE

If a student, must be actively enrolled in an accredited nursing program. Required
If not a student, 1 year of experience as a CNA, EMT, or Medical Assistant. Preferred
For the ED and ICU, 1 year of field experience as a paramedic or EMT Preferred

EDUCATION

High school diploma or equivalent Required
For non-nursing students, completion of a certified nurse assistant training, basic Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Paramedic or Medical Assistant program or equivalent. Required

Responsibilities

Prepare rooms for patient admission with appropriate equipment and supplies based on age and needs of patient; perform basic patient care tasks including baths, vital signs, positioning, ambulating, appropriate disposal of hazardous waste, and documentation of intake/output or other tasks delegated by the registered nurse (RN) within the scope of job duties.
Has the ability to perform advanced patient care tasks if assigned by their respective areas (See addendum).
Respond quickly to patient and family needs and problem solve appropriately in collaboration with the RN; maintain a safe patient environment at all times and transport stable patients to procedures or testing within the Children’s Medical Center physical building requiring minimal therapy needs in addition to patient discharge.
Assist in emergency situations by initiating BLS, continuing chest compressions, and/or participate as a runner; assist with unit regulatory readiness as assigned (including code cart checks); demonstrate skills as identified on the unit-based competency checklist, document legibly and completely.
May perform other duties as assigned.
