UPMC Mercy is hiring a Full Time Patient Safety Specialist to support our hospital! This position will work Monday-Friday during business hours. Purpose: Responsible for the development, implementation and monitoring of hospital-wide patient safety program. Responsibilities: Develop and present formal and informal patient safety education to hospital staff throughout the organization on an ongoing basis. Investigate actual and potential patient safety risks in the clinical operations of the hospital through rounds, chart reviews, interviews, physical inspection and other means as necessary. Adhere to the organization's Patient Safety Plan, goals and fulfills patient Safety objectives. Adhere to the national patient safety goals by planning, directing, and monitoring implementation aspects related to those goals. Adhere to regulatory requirements set forth by federal and state agencies relative to patient safety. Review actual and potential patient safety occurrences with physicians, department heads and managers, identifying trends, making recommendations for action, and assuring compliance with the program. Maintain investigative, claim and legal files with strict adherence to confidentiality mandates. Assist, as needed, the Hospital Legal Counsel with the preparation of cases during litigation processes. Communicates significant events, potential or actual claims, through established mechanisms in a timely manner. Participate in the hospital-wide performance improvement efforts through data gathering and analysis. Works cooperatively with other members of the department to meet common goals. Adhere to the on-call rotation in order to be informed of any patient safety occurrences. Serve as a role model to foster a patient safety culture in the organization. Bachelor's degree in Nursing, Business Administration, Finance, Accounting or related healthcare area required. 5 years of Clinical experience OR experience in risk, liability or loss control at the organizational level is required. Ability to work with a variety of Microsoft office software systems. Analytical ability to prepare, review and present statistical data. Interpersonal skills to work with management and physicians, and all levels of staff.
