Overview Responsible for transporting ambulatory and non-ambulatory persons (in wheelchairs) via a UnityPoint Health Des Moines wheelchair van from a hospital campus location to the destination. Responsibilities Job Duties: Safely maintain and operate a wheelchair van while in compliance with all laws and requirements pertaining to the operation of the vehicle and adheres to safety rules and practices. Secures all passengers in the van. Provide door-through-door pick-up and drop-off. Map out routes to and from specified destinations, identifying the most efficient route. Complete daily vehicle and equipment inspection. Assists individuals or maneuvers wheelchair on and off the vehicle. Adheres to all traffic regulations. Ensures that seat belts, hook-ups, and harnesses are in working order and secure on all mobility devices as appropriate. Reports any maintenance problems to manager or director. Keeps vehicle interior and exterior clean. Reports accidents and incidents in writing to manager or director. Performs other related duties as required. May need to collect payment when patient/family is paying by check or cash. Customer Service: Demonstrates initiative to improve quality and customer service by striving to exceed customer expectations. Qualifications Education: High School Diploma or GED Required. Experience: Customer service experience. Previous driving experience preferred. License(s)/Certification(s): Current Iowa D3 Chauffer License. BLS (will be obtained during training) Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Local geographical knowledge and ability to operate GPS device. Must be able to work with minimal supervision and assume responsibility for timely completion of assigned functions. Must be able to communicate effectively with people of a diverse professional, educational, and cultural background. Other: Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position.
