POSITION SUMMARY

Provides safe, courteous and efficient transportation services throughout the hospital environment to support the goal of providing the highest level of patient care to maximize customer satisfaction.

EDUCATION:

  • High School education or equivalent.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Preference is given to individuals with prior employment in a position which included direct patient care responsibilities or who have completed a patient care training program.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

  • Ability to follow instructions and perform routine tasks carefully and properly.
  • Must have physical capabilities to handle patients in a safe manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with team members as well as with employees of other departments.
  • Demonstrated commitment to functioning in a manner that places appropriate emphasis on customer satisfaction.
Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Performs escort duties as assigned and according to approved hospital and department policies and procedures.
  • Greets visitors, patients, staff, and volunteers pleasantly and courteously.
  • Accurately identifies patient by addressing the patient by name and checking identification band on each patient prior to transport.
  • Surveys and prepares environment for safe movement of patient and equipment.
  • Communicates with assigned nurse to coordinate appropriate patient preparation and transport.
  • Inspects transport equipment for serviceability; reports problems immediately to Supervisor for repair.
  • Prepares patient for transport as determined by assigned nurse.
  • Transfers or assists with transfer of persons to/from bed to litter and/or wheelchair using proper body mechanics and appropriate equipment.
  • Transports patients by wheelchair, litter, or as required along with equipment and/or belongings that must accompany patients for diagnostic testing, treatments, admissions, discharges and/or transfers.
  • Provides visitor escort as well as transportation of items as detailed in policies and procedures.
  • Obtains patient clinical chart and any other pertinent paperwork (such as diagnostic requests) from nursing unit and delivers to the appropriate area with the patient or item.
  • Provides escort service to patients who require special needs. Including, but not limited to, oxygen, IV, and suction apparatus.
  • Observes patients who need special attention during transport. Immediately advises personnel of potential problems or changes noted in patient’s condition. Remains with unruly patients until another member of the Hospital staff can assume the supervision of that patient.
  • Assists patients upon return to their room to meet safety and comfort needs.
  • Returns equipment to designated areas.
  • Monitors the schedule for needed transports in Expanse and checks frequently for phone messages.
  • Participates in cooperative coordination of activities as needed with volunteers.
  • Transports items as directed such as but not limited to specimens, charts, and inter-office mail.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities related to the job classification and nursing department operations as assigned.
  • Maintains current knowledge of Hospital Policies and Procedures.
  • Demonstrates constant awareness and compliance with departmental and hospital policies.
  • Demonstrates continuous adherence to safety, infection control and quality improvement standards. Uses infection control protective and safety devices provided. Advises supervisors of potential hazards if noted.
  • Utilizes communication skills to maintain a positive work environment.
  • Attends and participates in 50% of scheduled department meetings.
  • Uses assertive communication and active listening skills in conflict resolution.
  • Maintains communication with supervisor and seeks assistance when needed.
  • Participates in orientation of new staff as assigned.

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Performs all other related and miscellaneous duties as assigned.
