QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Business Management or similar education.
  • Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) certification required.
  • Other designations (eg. Certified Payroll Manager certificate considered an asset).
  • Minimum three (3) years in a comprehensive payroll role; preferably in a unionized environment.
  • Experience using Dayforce HRIS (preferred/asset)
  • Strong understanding of payroll systems, provincial/federal employment legislation, and benefits administration.
  • Familiarity with collective agreement interpretation, administration, and union reporting.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and HRIS/payroll systems.
  • High level of integrity and discretion in handling confidential and sensitive information.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across all levels of the organization.
Responsibilities

ABOUT THE ROLE:

The Payroll and Total Rewards Specialist is a key member of the People and Culture Team. This role is responsible for the accurate and timely administration of payroll, benefits, pension, and total rewards programs for all employees, including both unionized and non-unionized staff. This role ensures compliance with all legislative requirements, collective agreements, and internal policies while delivering exceptional service to employees and leaders. The Specialist also contributes to the development, analysis, and communication of compensation and benefits strategies that support the attraction, retention, and engagement of talent.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Payroll

  • Administer full-cycle payroll for salaried employees in Dayforce HRIS, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Perform payroll audits, reconciliations, and balancing prior to transmission.
  • Process statutory deductions, remittances, terminations, vacation pay, and other transactions in compliance with Alberta and federal regulations.
  • Maintain payroll calendars, schedules, and supporting documentation.
  • Respond to payroll-related inquiries from employees and leaders, ensuring timely and professional resolution.
  • Act as the primary liaison with benefit and pension administrators, CRA, auditors, and other external stakeholders.
  • Support onboarding/offboarding processes, including Records of Employment (ROEs) and benefits enrolments/terminations.
  • Develop communication materials and training resources for payroll, benefits, and compensation.
  • Recommend and support process improvements, automation opportunities, and system enhancements.
  • Ensure payroll practices comply with CRA, Alberta Employment Standards, and organizational policies.
  • Support the design, review, and administration of compensation and benefits programs.
  • Conduct market benchmarking to ensure competitive and equitable pay practices.
  • Administer benefits and pension programs, including enrolments, terminations, and leave-related changes.
  • Provide analysis and recommendations on compensation and benefits data.
  • Monitor trends and recommend initiatives to enhance employee engagement and retention.
  • Lead year-end payroll reporting, including T4s, WCB reports, and LAPP/APEX filings.
  • Compile and analyze HR data to support collective bargaining and labour relations.
  • Produce payroll and HR reports, cost analyses, and workforce dashboards for leaders.
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and compensation planning processes.
  • Ensure audit readiness through accurate recordkeeping and timely response to audit requests.
