JOB DESCRIPTION

The Payroll Manager is responsible for overseeing the end-to-end payroll process across domestic and international operations, ensuring timely and accurate compensation for employees while maintaining compliance with evolving tax and employment regulations. This role directs and reviews the work of payroll specialists, manages complex reporting tasks including expatriate and shadow payrolls, and leads quarterly and year-end payroll activities. As a key liaison between internal teams and external bodies, the Payroll Manager provides expert guidance on payroll matters, resolves inquiries with professionalism, and supports audits and financial reporting. With a strong focus on process optimization, this role drives payroll transformation initiatives and leads system implementations to enhance operational efficiency. The Payroll Manager plays a strategic role in strengthening governance, fostering collaboration, and mentoring team members.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • University degree in Accounting, Business, Human Resources, or related field.
  • PLP designation.
  • 8-10 years of related work experience, including supervisory/management skills.
  • Experience with payroll software/service providers, accounting systems and HRIS systems.
  • Strong computer skills and intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Excel.
  • Sound knowledge of payroll policies, practices, and procedures.
  • International payroll experience, including expatriate and multi-company experience.
  • Expert knowledge of Canadian and USA employment and payroll tax laws.
  • Experience working on transformation initiatives to support continuous improvement.

SKILLS

  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills; ability to exercise judgement and implement solutions with minimal direction.
  • Excellent time management skills, with the ability to organize, prioritize and meet both known and ad-hoc deadlines.
  • Ability to work with all levels of the organization.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills (verbal and written).
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Excellent commitment to accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Basic understanding of SOX requirements.
  • Experience with SAP and/or ADP is an asset.
  • Experience with payroll transformation activities
  • Ability to understand and map process flows with experience in optimization initiatives.
