About the Role: The overall purpose of the Payroll Officer position is that you will support the delivery of payroll services, ensuring compliance with all legislative, taxation, and industrial requirements. You will also provide accurate payroll information and advice to Victoria University employees regarding their terms and conditions of employment. In this role, you will administer end‑to‑end payroll processing and adjustments—including Workers’ Compensation—for all University employees. You will ensure all tasks are completed accurately, within designated timeframes, and in accordance with relevant legislation. Using VU’s payroll system (Ascender) and other computer-based tools, process all employee entitlements including superannuation, changes to Choice of Fund and Defined Benefits Schemes, payroll adjustments, leave loading, and payout of terminations Responsible for processing benefits and payroll deductions and escalating complex queries Administer, monitor and resolve timesheets related issues between payroll and VU’s customised inhouse systems for each pay period for payroll processing. Provide support with pay run audit processes through exception checking and identify any errors or Provide accurate payroll information and advice as needed to VU employees relating to their terms and conditions of employment. About You: You bring significant payroll experience gained within a medium to large corporate or public sector environment, enabling you to operate confidently in a complex and high‑volume setting. Experience with Ascender Pay will be highly regarded. In this role, you will: Work with a high degree of independence, applying sound judgement and strong decision‑making skills when performing payroll tasks. Build and maintain effective working relationships with internal stakeholders, including employees, People & Culture teams, and key external partners. Provide consistent, high‑quality payroll advice to managers and staff across the University, ensuring clarity and accuracy in every interaction. Interpret and apply complex legislation, industrial instruments, and policy requirements, knowing when to determine appropriate escalation points The University is a Child Safe organisation.
