We’re looking for a detail-oriented Payroll Specialist with experience in administering end-to-end payroll. This is a great opportunity to work in a team focused on continuous improvement and supporting employees across the organisation.
This is a great opportunity to work in a hands on payroll processing role and lead process enhancements, working across departments and contributing to meaningful community outcomes.

WHO AND WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR (SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE). YOU’LL HAVE:

  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience in a Payroll specialist role or similar.
  • Demonstrated experience to efficiently and accurately process the end-to-end payroll function, including processing wages (timesheet, higher duties, backpay), STP, Superannuation, and WorkCover,
  • Experience with range of systems and databases (we use CIVICA).
  • Prior experience in the preparation of a large/complex payroll service, including the interpretation and administration of employment legislation.
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated organisational and time management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to provide and report accurate information.
  • A demonstrated understanding of accounting principles and the impact of the payroll functions.

  • Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Payroll Team Leader, you will play a key role in Council’s payroll operations, responsible for day-to-day payroll processing for business units to ensure compliance with legislation and enterprise agreements, managing system processes, and ensuring accurate and timely payroll delivery. You’ll be responsible for administering payroll systems, interpreting employment conditions, and developing processes that enhance efficiency. You’ll also support annual reporting, budget preparation, and year-end financial requirements as well as supporting People and Culture with insights, compliance, and system improvements.
This parental leave cover role will commence in September 2025 (to December 2026), working a supportive team and with a handover period to help set you up for sucess.

You will:

  • Deliver the day-to-day operations of Council’s payroll, including timesheet processing.
  • Interpret employment conditions and provide accurate advice to employees, in collaboration with HR.
  • Ensure compliance with legislation, Council’s Enterprise Agreement, and internal policies.
  • Maintain accurate payroll procedures, documentation, and database integrity.
  • Assist in system testing and updates for the payroll module (Civica).
  • Complete year-end processes including salary accruals and leave liability reporting.
  • Provide payroll data and reports for budgeting, grants, WorkCover, superannuation, and other payments.
  • Support budget development through payroll forecasting and data analysis.
