Job Description

As a member of the MLSE’s Finance Payroll Team, you will support our North American vertical while ensuring efficient processing of the end-to-end payroll cycle. This includes on-cycle and off-cycle Payrolls, Payroll Accounting, and reporting for two hourly biweekly payrolls.

  • You will provide outstanding service to both internal and external customers and partners.
  • You will act as a subject matter expert (SME) to internal customers on Payroll matters, including regulatory and legislative matters.
  • Collaborate and partner with the People & Inclusion (P&I) department on pay matters.
  • Act as the first-level review following P&I approvals for two hourly bi-weekly payrolls.
  • Process manual changes in these payrolls as needed.
  • Retrieve payroll files from HRIS & Scheduling systems, and prepare them for upload into ADP WFN Payroll.
  • Act as future backup on other MLSE payrolls.
  • Reconcile all Payroll data and output reports, ensuring all policies, procedures, and internal controls are met.
  • Completion of Year-end adjustments, balancing/reconciliation, and filing requirements for T4 and other tax forms as the need arises.
  • Investigate and respond to PIER when required.
  • Other government inquiries/requests.
  • Payroll journal entries.
  • Payroll accrual journal entries.
  • Month-end account reconciliations for payroll, balance sheet, and clearing accounts.
  • Review and approve monthly payments for union dues, garnishments, family support payments, and others.
  • Investigate and respond to finance department inquiries.

Qualifications

  • You have 3 or more years of Payroll experience in a unionized environment.
  • Although not required, if you have earned a Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) designation, you will thrive in the role!
  • You have a proven understanding of Payroll accounting and strong Excel skills – these are very important and will lead to success!
  • Oracle user experience is a strong asset.
  • ADP Workforce Time and Attendance exposure would also be an asset.
  • You are motivated and can prioritize tasks under tight time constraints.
  • You are known as someone who is detail-oriented with a high degree of accuracy, even while working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • You possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a solutions-oriented approach.
  • You bring a strong understanding of HR practices, Canada Labour Code, as well as the Ontario Employment Standards Act.

  • You can work independently and be a strong collaborator and teammate.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills (both written and verbal) with strong active listening skills.
  • The ability to handle confidential information in an ethical and professional manner.
