SUMMARY

The Department of Pediatrics – Section Cardiology is currently seeking an Instructor to provide genetic counseling services to patients and families within the Pediatric Cardiology Section and the Cardiovascular Genetics Service.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education Required: Master’s degree in Genetic Counseling or related field.
  • Experience Required: None required.
  • Certification/Licenses/Registration Required: Board-eligible or Board-Certified Genetic Counselor (CGC) by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC).

Responsibilities
  • Provide genetic counseling services primarily to patients being evaluated for inherited arrhythmias and cardiomyopathies. May also provide genetic counseling services to patients being evaluated for congenital heart disease, aortopathies, and lipid disorders as needed.
  • Review medical records, obtain detailed medical and family histories, and construct pedigrees.
  • Provide education and counseling to patients about potential genetic etiologies, inheritance patterns, recurrence risks, and implications of genetic testing.
  • Develop genetic testing plans and coordinate testing.
  • Interpret genetic testing results and disclose to family.
  • Provide families with appropriate screening and management recommendations.
  • Facilitate testing for at-risk family members (cascade screening).
  • Draft and send letters to patients and families to summarize the genetic counseling session and provide information about the genetic diagnosis.
  • Answer patient calls and assess the need for services.
  • Facilitate research consent and enrollment of patients into applicable registries and maintain research pedigrees.
  • In some cases, refer clients to appropriate agencies and physicians.
  • Contribute to Cardiovascular Genetics curriculum and provide lectures to students and trainees.
  • Supervise and provide feedback to genetic counseling students.
  • Participate in Cardiovascular Genetics case conference for interesting and complex cases.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
