Description Peer Support Specialist, Safe Space Provide peer support services, model and guide de-escalation activities and coping skills, maintain a safe environment where peers experiencing untreated SUD, MH and Physical Health symptoms can congregate safely overnight, provide connection to community resources and treatment services for SUD, MH and physical health. Peer Support Specialists (PSS) provide support services to peers. Peers are individuals experiencing mental health, substance use disorder and/or houselessness. PSSs provide a wide range of supports, services, and advocacy services to individuals who desire peer support that contribute to a peer's ability to engage in ongoing programs and services, promote greater independence, community integration, and recovery from drug, alcohol, and mental health related issues. PSSs may share their own recovery story, if appropriate, and walk the road of recovery alongside the peer. Duties and responsibilities: · Exemplify recovery principles to show that recovery is possible and attainable. · Regularly attend and participate in staff meetings, supervision, and group supervision meetings. · Input/track peer intakes and services in tracking software (HMIS and AWARDS) and complete progress notes in a timely manner. · Practice cultural sensitivity, awareness, and competency regarding Person Centered and Peer Delivered Services. · Customize approach and apply techniques based on peer’s specific needs. · Connect peers to community resources and make referrals as needed. · Work with peers to identify the most immediate needs, and basic action steps to get specific needs met. · Engage and encourage peers to actively work toward goals to move toward stabilization. · Comply with all health and safety standards per state, MHACBO regulations, and CHANCE’s employee handbook. Other duties: · Maintain the physical safety of the “safe space”. · Model and guide recovery principles, shelter policies, and de-escalation and coping skills and strategies. · Provide warm hand-offs and referrals to community partners. · Communicate with Case Manager’s about participants' progress towards stabilization, including referrals and notes from safe space. Requirements Qualifications/Requirements: · High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent · Basic computer skills (Microsoft suite) · Must be able to pass a state background check · Excellent time management skills and ability to multitask · Experience working with individuals experiencing SUD, severe and persistent mental health issues · Must follow C.H.A.N.C.E.’s Code of Conduct, and policies and procedures · Must maintain strict confidentiality Skills: · Consistently maintain a professional demeanor and encourage individual respect · A team player who works collaboratively with others · Ability to work effectively with peers, community partners, coworkers, general public, medical personnel, corrections personnel, police, and groups without bias · Comfortable with and open to learning and applying new skills · Knowledge of community and social service agencies preferred · Sufficient manual dexterity and physical ability to perform assigned tasks, or able to use adaptive equipment to perform assigned tasks, if needed · Ability to work in an environment where people may be hostile, while contributing to a therapeutic environment · Knowledge of de-escalation methods or desire to be trained in them; feel comfortable asking for help if not trained in de-escalation · Ability to maintain accurate records and necessary documentation
