Description Beef Northwest Feeders is looking for experienced horsemen to join the cowboy crew. This position is someone who must check all pens assigned to them and recognize and pull all cattle that require treatment due to sickness and injury. This person must also receive, ship, and move cattle as required. This position works very closely with the Cattle Supervisor, the Hospital Crew and the Yard Manager. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Essential Ride pens per daily schedule identifying sickness and injuries Accurately record all sick ”pulled” cattle removed from pens on pull slip Accurately record pens ridden on cowboy pen map daily before end of shift Move cattle safely from pen to pen as directed Assist in sorting fat cattle as needed and directed Assist in loading and unloading cattle trucks as per schedule Furnish their own tack and horses Feed & care for those horses Marginal Assist in processing cattle as directed Assist in doctoring cattle as required Clean water tanks as needed Maintain yard housekeeping standards Other tasks or duties as required by supervisor Requirements QUALIFICATIONS Must be able to recognize sick & injured cattle and skillfully pull them out of the pen and move to hospital Must have good horsemanship skills Must have full knowledge of cattle handling skills Must be able to count cattle accurately Horse & cattle background is essential Excellent safety TYPICAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Mostly very heavy work requiring exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally Requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions Person subject to both inside & outside weather conditions including extreme cold, heat, noise, hazards, and atmospheric conditions Must be able to ride a horse 8-10 hours per day Haul and feed 120-pound hay bales Open & close gates, using occasional force MACHINES OPERATED Pickups Cattle Scales Cattle Chute Loader Bobcat PRODUCTION STANDARDS Identify and pull all sick & injured animals without missing any Meet or beat the minimum number of pen deads Handle cattle safely and in an orderly fashion Identify strays and put them in their correct pen
Responsibilities
The Pen Rider is responsible for checking assigned pens for sick or injured cattle and moving them as necessary. They will also assist in sorting and loading cattle, while maintaining accurate records of their activities.
