Position Summary The Lifeguard is responsible for pool safety and the prevention of accidents through enforcement and adherence to established policies, procedures, and regulations. Responsibilities Essential Functions • Rescues swimmers in danger of drowning. • Responds to emergencies according to policy and procedure and completes proper documentation. • Follows emergency action plan and established procedures in the event of an emergency. • Cautions swimmers regarding unsafe practices and safety hazards. • Supervises recreational and competitive swim meets. • Enforces and adheres to pool rules, while maintaining a safe and sanitary pool for participants, members, and their guests. • Possesses excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment. • Respects the rights and privacy of others and holds staff member information in strict confidence. • Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards. • Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures. Other Related Functions • Administers First Aid when necessary. • Submits incident reports within three business days to South Lake Hospital’s Risk Management office. • Participates in employee orientation and staff training sessions; attends staff meetings as required. • Advises Aquatics Supervisor and/or Lead Lifeguard of conditions/practices that may pose a threat to health and safety. • Responsible for the availability and safekeeping of emergency equipment (rescue tubes, backboard, signs, etc.). • Inspects facilities for cleanliness and performs general pool cleaning and maintenance duties as scheduled to maintain a clean and safe facility; keeps accurate maintenance charts. • Maintains order in the pool and adjoining areas. • Always presents professional appearance and attitude and maintains a high standard of customer service. • Wears uniform, swimsuit, rescue tube, whistle, hip pack and shirt (when necessary). • Determines chlorine content and pH value of water using water testing kit, and records readings. • Provides general information on pool operation to patrons. Qualifications Education/Training • Must be able to demonstrate reading, verbal and written communication, mathematical, and reasoning skills typically acquired through completion of a high school education. Licensure/Certification • Current Certified American Red Cross, Lifeguard Pro, YMCA, BSA, and First Aid Training or comparable/higher level. • Current HeartSaver or American Red Cross CPR-AED Certification. • Current Swim America Red Card, or swim instructor experience with the understanding that Swim America Red Card will be obtained within 30 days of hire through internal training. • Must pass the Foundations of Coaching Test within 90 days of hire.
