Description

BRISTOL

HR Director, Victoria James • 29 August 2025
At Great State, we create digital experiences that matter. From helping the Royal Navy recruit the next generation,
to making trips through Bristol Airport smoother, to shaping new ways people interact with brands like Honda and the RNLI — our work blends creativity, technology and human insight to make a real difference.
We’re looking for a Mid-Weight Product Designer to join our Bristol UX team. You’ll get stuck into a mix of websites, apps and digital services, working hands-on with user research, design systems and testing. It’s a role for someone who loves solving problems, thinking differently and pushing their craft further.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Designing websites, apps and digital products that are beautifully crafted and brilliantly usable.
  • Building and maintaining design systems in Figma so work scales smoothly.
  • Running and contributing to user research and testing, turning insight into action.
  • Using analytics and behavioural data to make smart design decisions.
  • Making sure everything we design is accessible and inclusive by default.
  • Collaborating with researchers, developers and strategists to bring ideas to life.
  • Exploring new tech, tools and trends to keep our work fresh.
  • Delivering high-quality design even when the deadlines are tight and the pressure’s on.

What we’re looking for:

  • At least 2 years’ experience in digital product design (bonus points if that’s in an agency).
  • Confident in Figma and experienced in working with design systems.
  • A solid understanding of accessibility and inclusive design principles.
  • Comfortable running user research and weaving insights into your work.
  • Able to use data and analytics to back up design decisions.
  • A portfolio that shows interesting thinking and smart problem-solving — not just polished visuals.
  • Curious about designing for younger audiences and new behaviours.
  • Excited by emerging technology and innovation.
  • Resilient, adaptable and collaborative.
  • GDS experience (or knowledge of GOV.UK standards) would be a big plus.

    The essentials:

  • This is a Hybrid role requiring 3 days a week onsite in our Central Bristol office.

  • You must be eligible for UK Security Clearance, which means:
  • At least 7 years’ UK residency
  • No criminal convictions
  • No unorthodox financial history

Why join us?

  • Projects that actually make a difference — from national defence to life-saving charities to everyday travel.
  • A team that’s serious about craft, but not about ego.
  • A place where interesting, ambitious people can grow their skills and careers.
  • Hybrid-friendly ways of working, with a lively Bristol HQ as your base.
  • A competitive salary and benefits package.

✨ If this sounds like your kind of challenge, we’d love to see your CV and portfolio.
