Family in the Cramlington area are looking to recruit for their energetic nine-year-old boy to enable and support him to access age-appropriate leisure activities in the local community, as well as give his parents some respite. He has a diagnosis of (ASD) autism spectrum disorder.
The family are looking for an experienced carer who can support and understand that it will be necessary to take a person-centred approach to all activities this young boy chooses to engage in. This will require a special set of skills as this young boy can be and is classed as a vulnerable child who needs an appropriate adult to keep him safe and to make correct choices when interacting with others so therefore gaining his trust is a priority.
The young boy is into gaming and enjoys playing tag, bowling going to the park, beach and going for walks and drives and he likes music, singing songs, dancing, playing etc and loves numbers (Maths).
Main Duties: You will be required to anticipate the child’s needs as he has limited awareness of danger and a complex sensory profile that needs to be managed using a sensory diet. Support with prompts to keep hydrated. Provide support with personal care and toileting, social stimulation and progressive levels of activity, he is a Gestalt Language Processor. To support and build up confidence. Acting as a ’support buddy’, encouraging his interests which include the above a plan will need to be adhered to and developed between both the family and the support buddy. Positive reinforcement is a must as although the young boy needs to be out in the community, he will need a great deal of encouragement and patience to encourage this. Assist the child to build relationships with peers within his wider community. He does not like overcrowded or loud noisy places
He will require someone 6 hours a week but he will initially need to be seen in the home so he can gain confidence in developing a relationship. Time may also be used at the family home to watch favourite movies, play games etc.
