The Personal Support Worker (PSW) reports directly to the registered personnel in charge of the shift, overseen by the Director of Care. The PSW is to assist the meeting the needs of residents including but not limited to; by performing or supporting personal grooming, meal service and day to day activities.

EDUCATION

  • Successful completion of an approved Personal Support Worker program that is a minimum of 600 hours in duration, including both classroom time and practical experience time.
  • The Personal Support Worker program must meet the training standard published by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities, dated July/October 2014. Proof of graduation issued by the education provider is required. OR
  • A registered nurse or registered practical nurse with adequate skills and knowledge to perform the duties of a personal support worker and who has the appropriate current certificate of registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
Responsibilities
  • Assist in meeting the needs of the residents by performing and or supporting the resident with the following tasks as assigned:
  • Assist with bathing (bed bath, tub, shower)
  • Assist with personal grooming needs (hair care, nail care, shaving, dressing) iii. Assist with oral hygiene (cleaning teeth, denture care, mouth washes)
  • Assist with meal service (meal delivery, meal set up, clean up)
  • Ensure residents are served the correct therapeutic diet and texture at each meal service and nourishment pass.
  • Assist with resident’s nutritional intake as required (provide supervision, encouragement, cueing, set up or total assistance)
  • Provide between meal nourishments as directed.
  • Assist resident with their individual toileting needs (from supervision to incontinence care) according to their plan of care.
  • Collect specimens as required/directed.
  • Promptly respond to resident call bells and door alarms.
  • Participate in and assist with nursing restorative/rehabilitative care programs as directed by the registered nursing staff in the home.
  • Make beds, change bed linen, collect and bag soiled linen and deliver to laundry room.
  • Maintain a tidy, safe environment in resident rooms and activity areas.
  • Clean instruments and equipment as directed.
  • Assist with activity and restorative care programs as assigned.
  • Document resident food and fluid intake daily as per the home’s policy. Notify registered staff of a change in resident’s regular eating habits and/or diet or texture tolerance.
  • Complete daily RAI-MDS documentation as directed. Seek support from the RAI Coordinator as required.
  • Provide individualized care to each resident based on their assessed needs and plan of care.
