PERSONAL SUPPORT WORKER SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

A successful Personal Support Worker candidate possesses various prerequisite skills and qualifications for the duties of this job. Some of these may include:

Directly reports to the Supervisor, Client & Staff Services, you will also need to maintain and complete data collection and reporting as needed to support the team to fulfill the clients’ service goals.
The Personal Support Worker will work with a variety of partners and client/caregivers and maintain timely and transparent communication with them to create a clear understanding of all timelines, activities, and outcomes.

QUALIFICATION

Education: Completion of a recognized PSW program or equivalent education offered by community colleges, vocational schools, or healthcare training institutions.
Training Program: Need to have completed a formal training program that covers personal care, assisting with daily living activities, communication skills, infection control, and basic healthcare procedures. It may also include both classroom instruction and hands-on practical experience, through clinical placement.
Certification: Need to have obtained a certification or licensure, indicating that the individual has completed the required training and meets the standards set by relevant health authorities.
First Aid and CPR Certification: Required to hold a valid First Aid and CPR certification.
Vulnerable Sector Check: Require a criminal record check to ensure the safety and well-being of the individuals they will be caring for.
Communication Skills: Strong communication skills to effectively interact with clients, their families, coworkers, and other healthcare professionals.
Compassion and Empathy: Because PSWs work closely with individuals who may be vulnerable, having a compassionate and empathetic nature is crucial.
Physical Fitness: The job of a PSW can involve physical tasks, such as lifting and assisting with mobility, so individuals should be physically capable of performing these duties.

Responsibilities

PERSONAL SUPPORT WORKER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Duties and responsibilities may include:

  • Working with clients and providing one-on-one care, such as assisting with personal care, meal preparation, and light homemaking. Personal care includes bathing, dressing, toileting, incontinence care, ambulation, client repositioning, and the use of transfer and lift techniques and/or equipment, e.g., Hoyer Lift. Light homemaking includes meal preparation, washing dishes, vacuuming, mopping floors, routine cleaning (toilet, tub, sinks, etc.), laundry, and using mops, vacuum cleaners, and other routine household appliances.
  • Ensuring the fulfillment of individual goals and needs as instructed in the client’s support plans, such as assisting clients with personal services like online grocery shopping and putting items away when delivered, booking of appointments, or transportation services.
  • Traveling between clients for a full day in the community that includes multiple clients within Supportive Housing Buildings and Transitional Units
  • Documenting and recording daily care reports, which may include incident reports, restraint monitoring, and medication administration.
  • Helping clients with leisure activities, including assessing functional and resource needs, about the needs and goals of the client.
  • Ensuring the health, safety, welfare, and independence of clients, including reporting any behavioral changes, physical hazards, safety, task changes, or other sources of concern to the Manager.
  • Assisting and satisfying the social and emotional needs of a client
  • Adhering to the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations set by the province or territory.
  • Attend staff meetings as required; fulfils health and safety reporting duties; undertakes training initiatives as assigned; maintains knowledge, observes and practices appropriate procedures regarding fire, safety, quality and environmental standards; maintains a safe, orderly and tidy work area.
  • Collaborate with other appropriate service systems, organizations, and individuals to ensure that services are well coordinated and meet a high standard of quality care and/or supervision.
  • Delivers all services in a professional manner and according to established guidelines and associated benchmarks.
  • Follow all health and safety guidelines established by the Joint Health & Safety Committee
  • Perform other duties as required.
