The Pet Support Specialist plays a vital role in making sure both animals and people have a positive experience every time they walk through our doors. Why You’ll Love This Role People + Animals. This unique role blends client service with hands-on animal care and intake support. Mission in Action. You’ll help families, foster caregivers, and adopters while supporting the care and movement of animals through the shelter. Variety Every Day. From assisting clients to preparing animals for foster or transfer, no two days are exactly alike. Team Collaboration. You’ll work closely with Intake, Foster, Admissions, Medical, and Client Experience teams to keep operations running smoothly. What the Day Really Looks Like Create a Welcoming Experience. Greet visitors, assist clients, answer questions, and support a positive experience in the Adoption & Retail Welcome Center and Intake/Foster Resource Center. Support Community Programs. Assist with retail purchases and donations, manage inventory and online order fulfillment, and help coordinate resources for the community pet pantry and foster program. Assist with Animal Intake. Support intake exams, routine vaccinations, and diagnostic testing while ensuring accurate recordkeeping in ShelterLuv or similar systems. Prepare Animals for Care. Help schedule spay/neuter procedures, prepare animals for foster placements or transfers, and maintain sanitation and disease prevention protocols. Support Foster & Transfer Logistics. Assist with foster pickups, foster supply kits, communication with foster families, and coordination of animal transfers with partner organizations. Keep Operations Organized. Maintain clean, organized workspaces and support cross-departmental coordination to ensure animals move smoothly through the shelter. Requirements You’re a Perfect Fit If You… Have experience in an animal shelter, veterinary clinic, or similar environment (preferred) Are confident handling cats and dogs of varying sizes and temperaments Enjoy working with the public and providing excellent customer service Are organized, detail-oriented, and able to juggle multiple priorities Are comfortable using databases and POS systems (ShelterLuv experience preferred) Have a valid Florida driver’s license with a clean driving record Are willing to obtain Fear Free Animal Handling certification Are passionate about animal welfare and HSSC’s mission The Nuts & Bolts Full-time, non-exempt/hourly position $19/hour Department: Intake & Foster Reports to: Intake & Foster Manager Shelter-based environment with frequent animal handling Ready to Support Pets and the People Who Love Them?
