EDUCATION AND TRAINING

  • To provide clinical advice to junior and trainee pharmacists, supporting them in their day to day work and acting as a mentor and role model.
  • To perform accompanied ward visits (in liaison with the Deputy Chief Pharmacist, Clinical Services and Principal Pharmacist, Education and Training), in order to monitor and improve the clinical ward pharmacy service, in line with Trust and national standards.
  • To act as rotational supervisor for rotational staff, carrying out appraisals as appropriate.
  • To participate in the education and training programmes for pharmacy, nursing and medical staff and all other health care professionals as required.
  • To provide clinical tutor support, as required, for pharmacists studying for certificates and diplomas, trainee pharmacists and pre-registration pharmacy technicians
Responsibilities

MAIN DUTIES OF THE JOB

  • To act as a role model and ensure all pharmacists, medical and nursing staff and other health care professionals are trained in the safe and effective use of biologics and adhere to best practice.
  • To lead in the development and delivery of the Biologics and Infusion Centre services, within the Trust, including biologics supplied via homecare, ensuring a safe and patient focused approach within this specialist area
  • To develop, implement, evaluate and monitor medicines management guidelines, policies and procedures related to biologics and regular infusions, in collaboration with appropriate specialists and in line with National Guidance.
  • To provide highly specialist individualised advice to consultants, clinical nurse specialists and other clinicians regarding these medications, their use, adverse effects and interface issues.
  • To provide highly specialised pharmaceutical information, advice and support to the multi-disciplinary team to ensure care is optimal, individualised and that timely medication reviews are undertaken as determined by relevant protocols.
  • To provide advice, counselling, oral and written information to patients and their carers about all aspects of their medication to improve concordance and aid self management of conditions as appropriate.
  • To horizon scan for new drugs in development and liaise with specialists regarding likely local impact, preparing business cases to secure funding for drug and service developments as appropriate.
  • To maintain appropriate data bases of patients receiving biologics and regular infusion therapy, coordinating the admission of patients into the unit to ensure the most cost effective use of biologics.
  • To ensure the quality of biologics prescribing is optimised and sustained and that local and national guidelines are being adhered to, by a cyclical process of audit within the Trust.
  • To provide education and training about the service to new pharmacy staff and other health care professionals as required.
  • Manage the Homecare Service Team
  • Screen Homecare prescriptions for clinical accuracy and appropriate funding
