EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Grade 12, graduation from a recognized Pharmacy Assistant course or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Responsibilities:

  • Receives, sorts, counts, measures and fills both patient-specific and non-patient-specific medication containers. Assists in the distribution of patient-specific and non-patient-specific medications to patient care units as directed and maintains appropriate records.
  • Compounds non-sterile pharmaceutical products according to established protocols.
  • Repackages medications into unit-of-use format. Maintains repackaging and compounding records.
  • Maintains appropriate quantities of wardstock medications (manual or automated dispensing cabinet system). Performs a validation of the accuracy of wardstock medications selected by other pharmacy staff in accordance to established policies and procedures. Maintains records of medication selection accuracy and the results of quality assurance reviews.
  • Maintains pharmacy department inventory and wardstock quantities for non-controlled and controlled medications. Distributes and maintains relevant inventory, transfer and wardstock delivery records.
  • Identifies outdated drugs to be returned or destroyed by reviewing stock for lot expiry dates.
  • Maintains department work areas by ensuring tidiness and order. Stocks pharmaceuticals, labels, containers and glassware in accordance with established procedures and standards.
  • Performs related clerical duties such as answering telephone, filing and maintaining medication and prescription records.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
