SUMMARY

The Primary Purpose of the Position is: To ensure compounded sterile preparations for non-hazardous, antineoplastic, and hazardous drugs have been appropriately prepared using aseptic technique, and verified in accordance with applicable regulatory standards,
VHA Regulations, Medical Center Policies, and standard operating procedures.
Position will require travel and support care for Me Program to and from Garland VA Medical Center up to 100% of the time.

QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education or Experience.(1) None required.(2) For all grade levels and positions that accept both education and experience to qualify, equivalent combinations of qualifying education and experience that total at least 100% are qualifying. The combined percentage is determined by adding total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level to the education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level.
  • Certification. For positions above the full performance level, the employee must pass a national certification exam and hold an active national certification through either:(1) Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT).OR(2) National Healthcareer Association (NHA), Certified Pharmacy Technician (ExCPT).
  • English Language Proficiency. Pharmacy Technician candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f).

May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

MAJOR DUTIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

Hazardous Medication Management

  • Performs essential role in preparation, compounding, dispensing, and distribution ofhazardous medications within designated sterile compounding areas using appropriateaseptic techniques according to policy and procedures.
  • Interprets orders appropriately and performs accurate product selection, dosagecalculations and compounding of agents in an aseptic and effective manner, utilizingpackage literature, written procedural guidelines and application of specializedknowledge in chemotherapy
  • Assists with the deactivation, decontamination, cleaning, and disinfection of hazardousagents while wearing the appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Receives hazardous IV chemotherapy inventory stock according to the National Institutefor Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) guidelines placing in proper storage areas,rotating stock on shelves, and removing/replacing outdated items.

Sterile Compounding

  • Knowledgeable in United States Pharmacopeia (USP) standards, Pharmacy Law, VHADirectives, and Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) regulations as they relate to practicewithin the VA Healthcare System and its organizational elements.
  • Uses aseptic technique to compound parenteral admixtures in the form of large volume,small volume, infusion syringe or another modality as required.
  • Successfully complete assignments and maintain annual competencies to compound IVsterile preparations according to USP standards.
  • Interprets orders appropriately and performs accurate product selection, dosagecalculations and compounding of agents in an aseptic and effective manner, utilizingpackage literature, written procedural guidelines and application of specializedknowledge.

Pharmaceutical Care

  • Accurately interprets, fills, and prepares prescriptions with appropriate medicationsand/or medical supplies for pharmacist verification of outpatient prescription orders,inpatient orders, and clinic orders as required per policy.
  • Monitor inventory and remove outdated pharmaceuticals in collaboration with pharmacyprocurement.
  • Ensure adherence to appropriate storage guidelines including high-risk, look-alike soundalike,and refrigerated items as per USP and VA guidelines.

Medication Order Fulfillment

  • Prepares medication orders properly with the correct drug, strength, dosage form,quantity, auxiliary labels
  • Inspects packaged items for accuracy and suitability (to include appropriate labeling anddocumentation) before submitting for final check by a pharmacist.
  • Ensures appropriate review of medications to be dispensed to hospital areas per servicelevel procedures.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 6:00 AM - 4:30PM Weekend and holiday coverage may be needed
