Description Job Title: Pharmacy Technician Department: Pharmacy Reports To: Pharmacist FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Hours: 30/week Shift: Days The Pharmacy Technician provides support for pharmaceutical services by ordering, stocking, preparing, and delivering medications under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. This position is deemed safety-sensitive and will adhere to all policies associated with this designation. The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. Assist health care providers and patients by greeting them in person and by phone, answering questions and requests, and referring all medication inquiries to the pharmacist Protect patients and facility employees by adhering to facility infection control and safety policies and protocols Organize medications for pharmacists to dispense by reading medication orders and prescriptions, preparing labels, calculating quantities to be dispersed, assembling intravenous solutions and other pharmaceutical therapies, filling medication drawers for the nursing home and the hospital Maintain pharmacy inventory by checking pharmacy stock to determine inventory levels, anticipating medication and supply needs, placing and expediting orders, verifying receipt of orders, and removing outdated drugs Maintain records by recording and filing physician orders and prescriptions, recording medications delivered for use by nursing home residents and hospital patients, recording issues to floor stock, and completing a controlled drug perpetual inventory log Process pharmacy billing by accurately calculating and recording medication charges for all patient types Ensure medication availability by delivering medications to patient care areas and departments in a timely manner. Restocks Emergency Room, Operating Room, Recovery Room, Hospital, and Nursing Home nursing stations from the approved floor stock list Prepare unit dose packaging with proper labeling Return outdated medication by removing outdated medications from the pharmacy and patient care areas, completing necessary forms, and preparing packages for shipment of outdated medications for credit or proper disposal Contribute to the pharmacy team's efforts by accomplishing all assigned tasks professionally and efficiently Timely documentation, according to the current Franklin County Medical Center’s Timely Documentation Protocol, is required Maintain confidentiality by protecting sensitive, proprietary, or confidential information. Adhere to HIPAA privacy and security requirements Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols Must wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required to maintain Infection Control Standards as set by the facility Performs other related duties as assigned REQUIRED SKILLS / ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES Knowledge of local, state, and federal regulatory requirements related to areas of functional responsibility Knowledge of Medical terminology and abbreviations; pharmacology and pharmacological nomenclature; medical therapeutics, pharmacokinetics, and disease states Knowledge of methods and procedures involved in the proper handling and storing of pharmaceutical supplies Knowledge of physiology, anatomy, pathology, chemistry, and mathematics as they relate to pharmacy practice Knowledge of prescription and non-prescription drugs and drug products and their indications, efficacy, dosage, mechanisms of action, fate and disposition (if known), major contraindications, and potential side effects A service-minded work ethic with a drive to meet patient care needs and a positive, upbeat attitude when encountering ambiguity and change Ability to interact effectively with people who have widely differing backgrounds Excellent oral and written communication skills in English Excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail Excellent time management skills with the ability to manage multiple patients at a time Strong analytical and problem-solving skills Ability to prioritize tasks and delegate them when appropriate Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality Proficiency with or the ability to quickly learn the organization's electronic medical record, medical equipment, and other technologies Proficiency in faxing, emailing, and Google Suite Knowledge in nursing, healthcare safety, state and federal regulations, and regulatory processes Must be capable of supervising multiple aspects of patient care and individuals providing that care Must be able to hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergencies Requirements MINIMUM QUALIFICATION Must have a High School Diploma or GED Equivalent Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification Registered as a Pharmacy Technician in the State of Idaho ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Regular and predictable attendance Regularly required to sit, bend, stoop, and stretch Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator, and other office equipment Requires a normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate reports Frequently able to lift/carry up to 50 pounds This job's specific visual abilities include reading and interpreting reports and data Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer Must be able to access and navigate throughout the department within the organization's facilities Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing, accessing necessary information, emailing, and other similar tasks WORK ENVIRONMENT FCMC operates 24 hours a day, every day of the year. The operational needs of departments may require that you be available to work all shifts, including weekends and holidays, to meet the needs of patients. Potential exposure to blood, body tissue, fluids, contagious diseases, chemotherapy agents, and hazardous waste. Occasional exposure to bodily injury, loud/unpleasant noise, unpleasant odor, and emotional or physical stress. May be required to work day or night in a confined environment or in varying temperatures. The employee works in the hospital setting. Exposed to moving mechanical parts 40% of the time. May be required to travel to other facilities to obtain training/certification as necessary.
