Pharmacy Technician Orlando VA Healthcare System Work Locations Orlando Veteran Affairs (VA) Medical Center 13800 Veterans Way Orlando, FL 32827 *Services will be provided onsite at the following locations within the Orlando VA Healthcare System, such as: Lake Baldwin VA Clinic 5201 Raymond Street Orlando, Florida 32803 Viera VA Clinic 2900 Veterans Way Viera, Florida 32940 Daytona VA Clinic 1776 N Williamson Blvd Daytona Beach, FL 32117 Citizenship Requirements: Must be a U.S. Citizen. Clearance Requirements: National Background Check with Inquiries, Fingerprints, and Drug Screen. Type of Employment: Full-Time, 40 hours per week. Period of Performance: Base Year plus four (4) Option Years Total Compensation: $23.41 per hour. Paid Time Off per Year: Up to 80 hours per year, occurring on day one. Sick Leave per Year: Up to 56 hours per year, occurring on day one. Paid Federal Holidays: Eleven (11) Paid Federal Holidays Qualifications Have and maintain national certification with Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB). Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT). National Health Career Association (NHA). Certified Pharmacy Technician (ExCP). Valid license to practice in the state of Florida. A minimum of one (1) year of Pharmacy Technician experience. Must have experience with computers and typing skills. **Copies of all certifications and resumes must be forwarded with your application. Summary of Duties The Pharmacy Technician will provide services such as reading and interpreting prescriptions and medication orders written by medical staff, selecting and retrieving medications of correct strength and dosage form prescribed, transcribing prescription data to labels using computer systems, preparing prescriptions for review by a pharmacist prior to dispensing, giving pertinent patient instructions when appropriate, and completing stock medication orders as instructed by the pharmacist. Working Hours The Pharmacy Technician will be scheduled normally from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday; after business hours, on weekends, and on holidays. Shifts may be 4, 8, 10, or 12 hours depending on assignment. Potential shifts will be performed within one of the following time frames: Dayshift, Evening Shift, and Night Shift - Times may vary. Attire The pharmacy technician is expected to wear professional clothing while on duty. The attire worn shall also be appropriate for the correctional environment in which the contract employee will be performing. Uniform will consist of Navy, Royal, or Ceil Blue scrubs. Duties and Responsibilities Accurately interpret, fill, and prepare prescriptions with appropriate medications and or medical supplies for pharmacist verification. Maintain work areas in a clean and orderly condition by assuring that all stock and equipment are in assigned places and all shelves and counters are free of dust and debris in order to create optimal work areas. Assure drugs and supplies are appropriately put away, stored, and secured according to United States Pharmacopeia (USP) and VA guidelines, including the storage of high-risk, look-alike, sound-alike, hazardous, controlled substances, corrosive chemicals, flammable liquids, and refrigerated items. Receive, check, rotate, and place in stock all items received from the pharmacy procurement section and identify and reconcile any discrepancies to ensure that the correct items have been received. Compound and/or reconstitute oral or external medication. Utilize automation dispensing equipment available to the pharmacy staff following all safety and quality assurance procedures. Report automation malfunctions to the supervisor as appropriate. Record expiration dates in the automatic prescription dispensing system upon receipt. Perform ward/unit/area inspections in assigned areas to ensure proper storage of medications and soon-to-expire drugs are removed. Complete inspection reports in compliance with regulatory requirements. Answer questions from pharmacy and non-pharmacy personnel regarding drug distribution. Identifies basic therapeutic problems, such as duplicate therapy with drugs in the same class, and alerts the pharmacist to the possible need for clinical intervention. Demonstrate the ability to work under a variety of circumstances to maximize group productivity and quality. Perform all duties of a pharmacy technician to prepare/fill/package prescriptions or inpatient orders for verification and distribution. Medications (non-sterile). This includes calculating and converting the amount of drug or solution to be used to proper weights and measures for final pharmacist verification. Manufacture products requiring compounding, whether made in large batches for more than one patient or in small batches to fill a single prescription or drug order. Correctly interpret physician orders, select, and measure appropriate ingredients, mix ingredients in a safe and effective manner, inspect the final product for accuracy, label the product, maintain records of the manufacturing process, and attain a final check by a pharmacist. Use standard protocols to determine an accurate expiration date for each batch prepared. Proficiently operate equipment, including but not limited to balancing and mixing machines, in the routing of manufacturing pharmaceutical products.
