PHD PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Center for Marketing & Supply Chain Management at Nyenrode Business University invites applications for a fully-funded, four-year PhD research project. The project is part of the “future-proof smart logistics” program, led by TNO—the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research. The project includes a systematic literature review and expert interviews, developing a scalable horizontal collaborative business model, and model validation using agent-based simulation and system dynamics modelling. Under the supervision of Prof. Bo van der Rhee and Dr. Taher Ahmadi, the PhD candidate will contribute to shaping next-generation logistics ecosystems that are cost-efficient, environmentally friendly, and resilient. The project employs both empirical and analytical research methodologies. In addition to close collaboration with TNO, the primary objective of this research project is to publish scientific articles in highly ranked, peer-reviewed journals in the field. These publications will ultimately form the foundation of the PhD dissertation, which is written in English. The teaching commitment will not exceed 20% of the appointment.

WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • A Master’s degree in computer science, econometrics, industrial engineering, business administration, or a closely related discipline.
  • Thorough knowledge of supply chain management and logistics.
  • Experience with simulation and programming tools (e.g., AnyLogic, Vensim, or similar).
  • Strong analytical skills with a solid understanding of quantitative and qualitative research methods.
  • A collaborative mindset, with the ability to contribute effectively to a multidisciplinary research team.
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both written and spoken.
Responsibilities

  • Curriculum Vitae: including a list of publications (if applicable) and contact details of three academic referees.
