Learn more about: working at Simula and careers at Simula Project/Job description: In the department of High Performance Computing, we are now seeking a PhD student in the project UPS: Unlocking the Power of Spatial Computing using Tile-Centric AI Accelerators. A new trend in processor architecture design is rise of dedicated accelerator hardware for machine learning and HPC applications such as the Cerebras Wafer Scale Engine and the NextSilicon Maverick. These processors have evolved from the experimental state into market-ready products, and they have the potential to constitute the next major architectural shift after GPUs saw widespread adoption more than a decade ago. Like the GPU, these new devices can accelerate computations which remain challenging for traditional CPUs, but unlocking their power requires new programming techniques. The goal of the project is to develop such techniques and make those AI Accelerators more accessible. The successful candidate will join the project team and the high-performance computing department at Simula. A substantial part of the work will consist of programming AI Accelerators in order to understand their capabilities and potential for energy efficiency. A strong focus will be on life science simulations and combinatorial optimization in addition to AI applications. In addition, substantial time will be spent on analyzing the behavior of these new machines in order to understand which applications can be accelerated successfully. In addition to AI algorithms, we are particularly interested in sparse linear algebra as well as graph problems. Candidate Profile We are looking for candidates for a 3-year PhD candidate position. Candidates should have a solid background in algorithms, performance engineering, computer architecture, and C/C++ programming.
