Description:

The new Center of Excellence TRANSITION – Changing Urban and Rural lives at the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Copenhagen, is seeking applicants for a PhD scholarship in sociolinguistics focusing on place and mobility in the 20th century . We welcome applications from candidates with backgrounds in Danish studies, Scandinavian studies, linguistics or ethnology.
The successful candidate will be linked to the TRANSITION center, enrolled at the PhD School at the Faculty of Humanities and affiliated with the Department of Nordic Studies and Linguistics (NorS).

THE SCHOLARSHIP IS FOR 3 YEARS, FULL-TIME, STARTING ON 1 JUNE 2025 OR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE THEREAFTER.

We are looking for a motivated PhD candidate who will join TRANSITION – Center for Changing Urban and Rural Lives , a new Center of Excellence set to open on February 1, 2025. It is funded for up to 10 years by the Danish National Research Foundation (https://dg.dk/en/) and represents a collaboration between the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Copenhagen and the National Museum of Denmark.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must have a two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS) or equivalent and, as a minimum, have submitted a master’s thesis for which they have received pre-approval at the time of application. Furthermore, applicants must have a good knowledge of modern cultural history, and experience and/or knowledge of working with archival or corpus material. Candidates, who demonstrates interest demographic developments, mobility and linguistic encounters, will be prioritized.
The applicant must enclose an outline project proposal (see details below), which will be further developed in dialogue with the supervisors and the TRANSITION core team. The outlined project should include suggestions for relevant research questions, theory and methods.
The qualifications of applicants with non-Danish master’s degrees will be assessed to decide whether they correspond to the Danish level. For further information, please refer to the website of the Ministry of Education and Research:

Applicants must possess skills in written and spoken academic English at a high level. The empirical data is in Danish, for this reason the successful candidate must hold skills in Danish or another Scandinavian Language.

To be awarded a PhD scholarship the applicant has to enroll as a PhD student at the Faculty of Humanities, cf. the rules of the Danish Ministerial order No 1039 of 27 August 2013 .
