The stipend is open for appointment from 01.04.2025 or soon thereafter. The duration of the position is 3 years. Department of Materials and Production (MP) is a wide-ranging research and educational environment at Aalborg University. The Department’s mission is to meet the future’s demands for new materials and production systems by directing the whole value chain from basic material understanding, materials’ applications in mechanical constructions, industrial production, and management. The department has several strong, international, and innovative research groups which comprise everything from basic science to strategic and applicable research. The activities encompass research as well as education within materials, mechanics, physics, production technique, and industrial management and innovation. Benefitting the industry and additional collaborators several innovative and unconventional collaborations have been and are developed through interdisciplinary co-operations. Thereby, as an employee at the department, you will become a part of an international research environment, where the focus is on innovation, knowledge sharing/building, and interdisciplinary collaborations.

JOBBESKRIVELSE

We are seeking an ambitious and motivated PhD candidate to join our cutting-edge research group specializing in energy conversion technologies. This fully funded position focuses on developing highly efficient thermophotovoltaic (TPV) systems.
The PhD work will contribute to a recently awarded Independent Research Fund Denmark project under Green Research titled: Thermal Battery: Revolutionizing the Efficient Use of Intermittent Renewable Energies (REUSE). The goal of the REUSE project is to develop efficient selective emitters to improve the efficiency of the current thermophotovoltaic systems.
The candidate will work on the development of refractory materials-based metamaterials/photonic crystals as selective emitters for TPV applications. The research will leverage insights from recent publications, including: 10.1002/adma.202305922,10.1002/adom.202100323 and10.1038/s41598-019-43640-6. The PhD candidate will have full access to state-of-the-art nanofabrication facilities.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Master’s degree physics/nanotechnology/materials science, or a related field.
  • Background in optics, semiconductor devices, or thermal engineering is a plus
  • Hands on experience on various nanofabrication technologies, e.g., sputtering/e-beam deposition systems, Optical spectroscopy, SEM/EDX characterizations, etc.
  • Knowledge of technical software and programming languages (CST, COMSOL, Matlab, Python, etc.) will be a plus.
  • Strong interest in renewable energy and advanced energy conversion technologies.
