Description Shift: Day Job Summary: Collects appropriate venous and capillary samples from all age groups. Operates basic equipment and performs waived or moderate complexity lab tests under the supervision of a Technologist. Follows the policies and procedures of the hospital and the lab. Demonstrates Competency in the Following Areas: Proficient and competent at venipuncture. Pays attention to timeliness of all collections and completes procedures scheduled during the shift. Prioritizes work to achieve maximum efficiency and collects timed specimens within 10 min. and STATS within 5 min. oftime of order. Assist technical staff, put away supplies and performs other duties as required. Keeps all phlebotomy trays stocked, organized, and sanitary. Greets patients in a courteous manner by introducing self and asking the patient to give their name. Verifies correct patient by checking the request and patient’s wristband before the procedure begins. Disposes of used needles in proper containers, does not recap needles. Obeys all institutional and dept. policies and procedures regarding patient care, with special attention to biohazard procedures. Assists in orientation and training of new staff members as necessary. Demonstrates ability to assess the situation, consider alternatives, and choose the appropriate action. Washes hands before and after each patient contact. Recognizes how the Phlebotomists position and duties relate to the overall function of the lab and the hospital view of patient care. Seeks information or asks for assistance from appropriate personnel regarding patients who present difficulties. Knowledgeable in the requirements of appropriate collection devices, anticoagulants, special handling, and special preparation for tests prior to collection. Labels test tubes immediately after procedure is completed. Hand labels if no computer label is available. Requirements Professional Requirements Meets dress code standards; appearance is neat and clean. Completes annual education requirements. Reports to work on time and as scheduled, completes work within designated time. Wears identification while on duty; uses computerized punch time system correctly. Professional Requirements Attends mandatory meetings; attends and/or reads minutes of other scheduled meetings. Supports the Mission and goals of JCMH and department for quality patient care. Respects patient confidentiality and uses discretion in discussion of patient information. Recognizes when others are in need of assistance and consistently offers to help when own workload permits or finds someone who can. Assists Managers/Supervisors with scheduling/workload needs. Demonstrates courteous behavior and telephone etiquette through polite and respectful communication with all patients, guests and co-workers. Follows hospital and departmental requirements for infection control and safety. Demonstrates evidence of maintaining professional knowledge and skills (competency). Demonstrates initiative in all areas. Regulatory and Education Requirements: High School graduate or equivalent required. Phlebotomy Certificate, Medical Assistant or CNA preferred. Experience: Completion of a Phlebotomy training program preferred. Skills: Excellent customer relations skills. Mathematical, verbal, and written skills at the High School level. Near visual and hearing acuity is essential as well as motor coordination.
