QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum 1 to 3 years of phlebotomy experience, preferably in a hospital or clinical setting
  • Knowledge of proper blood collection techniques and specimen handling procedures
  • Familiarity with laboratory standards and compliance protocols

Preferred:

  • Phlebotomy Certification

SCHEDULING REQUIREMENTS:

  • Shift working, 7am-3:30pm
  • Work weekends as part of the standard phlebotomy rotation schedule
  • Per Diem (PD)

Responsibilities
  • Staff must ensure two points of identification such as full name and medical record number or date of birth before collecting specimens
  • Actively engage in patient identification procedures by asking the patient to verify their full name
  • Reinforce that accurate patient identification is the most critical aspect of blood collection
  • Verify that specimen labels include five required pieces of information, including full name, medical record number, date, time, and collector s initials
  • Ensure labeling occurs in the presence of the patient for accuracy
  • Investigate and correct any mislabeling incidents immediately
  • Utilize appropriate collection devices for each patient
  • Follow the correct Order of Draw to pecimen integrity
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of tube requirements for different tests
  • Reduce hemolysis and clotting risks through proper collection techniques
  • Ensure prompt responses to collection requests and provide efficient capillary collection procedures
  • Issue correct fluid and urine containers with proper labeling
  • Ensure effective handwashing techniques are practiced regularly
  • Confirm staff adhere to proper glove disposal and sharps handling procedures
  • Maintain knowledge of Standard Precautions and train staff accordingly
  • Participate in in-services addressing infection rate variance such as blood cultures
  • Answer calls within three rings, providing a professional greeting and department location
  • Maintain a courteous and professional demeanor at all times
  • Avoid excessive call transfers, ensuring inquiries are directed appropriately
  • Promptly return calls to clients
  • Assist in scheduling special tests such as glucose tolerance tests
  • Actively contribute as a team player, demonstrating cooperation and flexibility in the workplace
  • Provide break and meal coverage for staff when needed
  • Maintain punctuality to ensure smooth shift transitions
  • Work additional hours when necessary to support adequate staffing levels
  • Assist with weekend and management coverage when required
  • Ensure that staff follow Standard Precautions and OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen protocols
  • Dispose of biohazardous and non-biohazardous waste properly
  • Clean spills immediately in accordance with Chemical Hygiene Plan and MSDS instructions
  • Use appropriate protective equipment, including gloves, masks, eyewear, and lab coats
  • Complete annual safety training on fire hazards, electrical safety, universal precautions, and chemical handling
  • Maintain good working relationships with fellow employees and hospital personnel
  • Answer telephone calls politely and professionally
  • Display a helpful and hospitable attitude toward colleagues and patients
  • Coordinate and oversee the distribution of patient reports to appropriate doctors and facilities
  • Ensure cover sheets are inserted correctly before mailing reports
  • Generate and fax reports upon request
  • Follow up to confirm successful transmissions
  • Scan and organize reports, requisitions, and billing requests as necessary
  • Complete a minimum of 12 hours of continuing education annually through seminars, professional journals, online training, and in-house meetings
  • Participate in self-tutoring programs and engage with new research in phlebotomy techniques
