MACON COMMUNITY HOSPITAL  Position Description Department Name: Laboratory Job Title: Phlebotomist/Registrar Reports to (Title): Laboratory Supervisor, Director, Medical Technologist Supervises: (Positions) None. I.Position Summary: This position is responsible for performing venipunctures, fingersticks, and heelsticks on patients. Also assists with general clerical work and limited phases of laboratory work. Routine typing of memos and reports and operations of the lab’s computer are included. Responsible to actively participate in quality assurance/performance improvement activities to ensure processes are meeting the intended goal/outcome, to identify opportunities for improvement, and to be accountable for the quality of care provided in their respective area. The Phlebotomist/Registrar must project a professional, caring image while registering patients and specimens for outpatient lab procedures. Will be responsible for ensuring that all phases of the registration process (interviews, collection of pre-pays, etc) are completed in an accurate and timely manner. This process will guarantee: (1) that maximum collection is received, (2) preclude any claims denials, (3) that all claims are processed according to state, federal and hospital regulations. II.Position Requirements: A.Licensure/Certification/Registration: N/A B.Education: High School diploma or equivalency required. B.Experience: One to three months of experience as to knowledge of procedures and terminology is required. C.Special qualifications: The person filling this position must have the ability to verbally communicate well. Walking orstanding most of the day is required. Some sitting, stooping and bending when performing phlebotomy is also needed.Visual acuity, motor coordination and manual dexterity are required to operate computer. Lifts and carries light laboratoryequipment and containers. Typing 40 w.p.m. is required. Works inside and is exposed to infection from disease-bearingspecimens and to odorous chemicals and specimens. III.Degree of Supervision Required: Involves guidance and direction by Supervisor and/or Technologist. IV. Ages of Patients Served:    This position requires competence in assessment, treatment, and/or care for the age groups indicated. The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care, based on physical, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her assigned service area. The skills and knowledge needed to provide such care may be gained through education, training, or experience. Physical Requirements: Requires corrected hearing and vision to within functional ranges. Requires manual dexterity to operate equipment and computers. Requires frequent walking, standing, sitting and reaching. Occasionally may require olfactory or color discrimination. VII. Personal Protective Equipment: This position requires the use of personal protective equipment during various tasks/activities. Personal protective equipment includes, but is not limited to, gloves, masks and safety glasses.
