Phlebotomist - Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Department: Phlebotomy Center – Lower Sindh Entity: Aga Khan University Hospital Location: Nawabshah, Pakistan Introduction: The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at The Aga Khan University is a dynamic academic center that serves the diagnostic needs of the country through its extensive clinical laboratory services network across Pakistan. AKUH’s Clinical Laboratory is accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and provides services through its tertiary care laboratory at the main campus, more than 300 specimen collection units, and multiple Stat and Phlebotomy Centers nationwide. The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine comprises five major sections: Chemical Pathology, Hematology & Transfusion Medicine, Histopathology, Microbiology, and Molecular Pathology. Each section is academically driven and actively involved in research, undergraduate and postgraduate education, and training. Responsibilities You will be responsible to: Verify each patient's identification according to the lab tests requisition slips and check patient's status through verbal questioning to ensure that he/she fulfils the test requirements for collection of correct samples on a daily basis. Performs accurate and gentle vein puncture procedures to collect blood, inject the same into the specific container(s) according to test requirements on a daily basis to provide quality service. Label each patient's sample container before collection of specimen according to the laboratory protocol to avoid mix-up of specimens. Centrifuge the specimen when required, make aliquots of serum /plasma into secondary tubes by ensuring proper labeling and store the sample at required temperature. Distribute blood samples to concerned sections of the clinical Laboratory as per the lab test requirements as and when requirements. Collect blood samples from the patient's home when assigned as home visit phlebotomist in accordance with the phlebotomy protocol to provide quality patient care at home. Explain phlebotomy procedures to patients for special lab tests according to the lab tests requirements in line with the laboratory protocol as and when required for collection of correct sample. Assists in collecting blood from difficult veins and performs vein puncture on infants and pediatric patients. Requirements You should have: Matric/Intermediate preferred. 1-2 year of experience of venipuncture on adults and as well as pediatric patients. Ability to read and write simple English. Knowledge of various collection containers Comprehensive employment reference checks will be conducted.
Responsibilities
The Phlebotomist is responsible for verifying patient identification, performing accurate and gentle vein puncture procedures to collect blood samples, and labeling containers according to protocol. Duties also include centrifuging, aliquoting, storing, and distributing specimens, as well as conducting home visits when assigned.
